Hi folks
I'm want to race the 12 hours of temecula in 08. Most likely will go Sport solo I've never ridden there so I have no idea of what the trail is like. This would also be my first endurance race. Question is: Has anyone done it fully rigid? I ride a 29er Salsa Mamasita with a White Brothers carbon fork, and gears. Any info will be appreciated |

A 29er with a carbon fork will be fine for out there. You may be a little sore after awhile, but the bike should easily be able to handle it, especially if you are used to riding rigid.

With a name like bigringrider, is there any question that you need to go rigid to back up the name

I rode November's race rigid- no reason not. My setup is a 29"er with a Pace carbon fork. The boneshaker descent was not my favorite. On the plus side, though, the sustained climbs were like butta. Kinda like being on a road bike at times.

If it were me and I was doing my first 12 hr race (solo none the less) I would probably not do it rigid. Mind you I'm a masochist, I just think that you will enjoy your first 12 hr race more if you still have your arms after 8 hours. In addition to this, if your first race sucks then you probably won't want to do another one.
I suggest riding with some suspension the first race then if you decide you're a bad a$$ you can go ahead and ride the next two in the series with no suspension and have the women lusting after you and your amazing manlyness (at least I think thats how it works) ![]() |

Run it rigid, done it with front squish, full squish etc and rigid was my fav!
I will be using my Schwinn Beach Cruiser - single and rigid- for the Jan race...should be fun!

Forgot to mention the hand numbness I had after the race... for a few days. This January I'll be doing it as a 2 person, taking the second half of the race (my partner has to leave halfway through) and I might put a suspension fork on this time around.
For the most part, I really like rigid for rough, techy stuff. Better steering control. It's NOT fun when you're going really fast down a bumpy descent. Had the same hand problem at the Cascade Cream Puff this year- 45 minute fast-as-you-can-pedal descent. Had me in tears! I'd say, go with the setup you like to ride, torpedoes be damned! |
