Beer! How did you know?

Hey!
The Mt. SAC Community College race is very cool. Does anyone know if it makes a good deal of money? Why do I ask? I work at a Community college too. I was thinking of pitching the idea of a fundraising mountain bike race to our Dean of Athletics; but, I don’t know anything about how much races make or how to start one. Does anyone know the race organizer at Mt. SAC? Does anyone know if there is such a thing as a mountain bike race event planner? Any info you could give me would be great! Cheers!

Mt. SAC is not-for-profit. I'd check out their race website for contact info and specifics.

The IMBA Website might have some info on planning a race.

I know that the Mt Sac money is put back into the school and because it is so reasonable to race there I can't imagine it makes a ton of money...but it gives them exposure.
Start with talking to your campus and find out if you can use the property on campus for your event...that is the hardest part. Finding a venue! If you have to run it on city streets then you have a bit of a battle but it can be done. Then you will have to get the appropriate permits and insurance. Go for it! It's a blast to put on events! I am willing to help you out in any way.... |

As Cowgirl mentioned, it's a blast putting on events. I've been involved with putting on many competitions, and man, it can be stressful! But by the end of some events, you ask yourself why the hell would anyone put themselves through that much torture to put on an event.
And then during the following week, you reflect on the event and the efforts involved really were a lot of fun, and you look forward to doing your next event. It's even better when you hear all the positive comments afterword (which is kind of a reminder to thank those who do put on events). Then the cycle repeats.

Thanks so much for the offer of help! If I do end up going down this road I will totally rally the group! BTW, the College (Santiago Canyon College) is attached, almost, to Santiago Oaks. I wonder if the park would let us run an event there. ![]()

Great idea - Irvine Ranch Land Reserve might be a really cool area. I have never actually been back on that piece of land but I have been meaning to find a docent led ride and check it out.

Ben Eisley at the mt sac welding program is the guy you'd be looking for. According to a friend who's in the welding program there, Ben Eisley is an avid mt biker as well. Probably a lot easier for him to organize it

How about a Poker ride instead? You'll need to get sponsors though for the swag. But this would get you around the speed limit and stigma of hosting a "race."
