Default 2008 National Mountain Bike Series Calendar Set

2008 National Mountain Bike Series Schedule
by Karl Rosengarth

From Dirt Rag magazine:
http://www.dirtragmag.com/web/article.php?ID=975&category2=freshdirt
  1. 2008 National Mountain Bike Series Schedule
    1. March 29-30 – Fontana National, Southridge Park, Fontana, CA: XC/DH/ST/4X/Super D
    2. April 5-6 – NOVA National, McDowell Mountain Regional Park, Fountain Hills, AZ: XC/ST/Super D
    3. May 17-18 – Santa Ynez National presented by Platinum Performance, Ted Chamberlin Ranch, Los Olivos, CA: XC/DH/DS/ST/Super D
    4. June 28-29 – Deer Valley National, Deer Valley Resort, Park City, UT: XC/DH/DS/ST/Super D
    5. July 12-13 – East Coast National, Windham Resort, Windham, NY: XC/DH/DS/ST/Super D
    6. Aug. 30 – Sept. 1 – NMBS Finals, Tamarack Resort, Tamarack, ID: XC/DH/4Xor DS/ST/Super D
    Key: XC=Cross Country, ST=Short Track, DS= Dual Slalom, 4X=Mountain Cross, DH=Downhill, Super D=Super D
A mix of new and traditional venues will make up the six-round National Mountain Bike Series (NMBS) Calendar in 2008. Tamarac Resort at McCall, ID will host its first event—namely the Series Finals on August 30th through September 1st.

The other new venue is Windham Resort, NY, which will host the series on July 12-13th. "Plattekill Mountain is the gravity base of New England, there's a huge gravity crowd in and around that area. We're excited to be going there for that, but also, the venue is two hours southwest of Mt. Snow, the National Championships venue, and our race is the weekend before. It's the last chance to qualify for the Nationals," explains NMBS director Jeff Frost.

The 2008 National Mountain Bike Series is sanctioned by the national governing body of cycling sports, USA Cycling. The series determines the most consistent performers over an entire summer's gruelling competition. For more information visit www.mtbnationals.com.

Dear Jeff Frost-
I think Giant fans and Patriot fans alike will concur that New York is not part of New England!

I'm pumped this is going (relativly) near my new hood though.

I'd love to be able to make a few of those events.

If anyone wants to share a room, keep us in mind.

If it's upstate, according to Dan, it's pretty much New England (though being a Mass native, I disagree)

Man bo Glaund is crazy!!! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_England

I'd house 2 racers in Boston (4 hour drive) for the New York event, with enough notice.

Thumbs up 2008 National Mountain Bike Series

I saw that someone posted the Cal State and Fontucky info for 2008, so I thought I'd post this up for the 2008 National Mountain Bike Series;

2008 National Mountain Bike Series Calendar Announced

November 2nd, 2007 by Gregg

For Immediate Release
PARK CITY, Utah, (October 31, 2007) — The six-round National Mountain Bike Series is officially set for 2008. It includes a mixture of the highly successful venues visited in ‘07, and two exciting new venues making their debut on the national mountain biking circuit.
One of the new venues is Tamarac Resort, at McCall, Idaho, which hosts the series finale, August 30 - September 1. This event is scheduled so as to allow the US Olympians to return from their races in Beijing, 22-23 August, and still compete for the series win. “We wanted the top athletes to have an opportunity to race in the finals, they have expressed a desire to do so, and we are more than happy to oblige,” says series director Jeff Frost.
The other new venue is Windham Resort, New York, July 12-13. “Plattekill Mountain is the gravity base of New England, there’s a huge gravity crowd in and around that area. We’re excited to be going there for that, but also, the venue is two hours southwest of Mt Snow, the national championships venue, and our race is the weekend before. It’s the last chance to qualify for the nationals,” explains Frost.
The 2007 series saw continued growth in participant numbers, with 10,000 entrants and 14,000 starts. “I think we’ve found our plateau, Our events have become 70% regional and 30% national, which is a very healthy mix. This series is a standalone and has nothing to do with NORBA. As our reputation grows as a standalone entity, so does the pull from the region surrounding the event,” says Frost.
Amateur participation at the regional level is growing, with many athletes traveling to just one or two events in the series. The past couple of years have seen a drop-off in the number of semi-pro and expert class riders. “There is a complex of economic reasons why we’re seeing this,” explains Frost. He adds, “the fact that the series is growing at the grassroots level is very significant, that’s a very good sign for the future.”
With the nuts and bolts of staging the events firmly in place, Frost has been looking for ways to enhance the weekend mountain biking experience for competitors. “One thing we’re doing is going back to basics by offering a rich schwag bag to all entrants, nobody ever complained about that! Perhaps more significantly, we’re ramping up our services for campers. We’ve seen an increase in campsites in recent years, so we’re providing more showers, for example. As managing director of the series, apart from demonstrating that it can exist as an economically self-supporting entity, improved athlete facilities and services could end up being my main contribution.”

You and Lacey will love the Super D course at Deer Valley, it's everything you would hope a Super D race would be.

No AZ. race?

You guy's look to be doing all of the races that I'm going to try and get Lacey to. I'd like to get her to AZ also.

I have a vacation week that starts with Fontucky, and ends with AZ.

Mebbe we'll go for XC. I've got to decide if I want to do one or the other, or both... Both is gonna wear me out.

How many races do you have to do and how do you have to place to go to the Nats?

Is it on a site somewhere?

Thx.
