Allright.... I'm in the process of selecting new wheels for my new Trek. Obviously, tons of options. Wheel systems, or handbuilt? I was thinking going with handbuilt, as I usually go with pre-built wheel systems (Crossmax sl, etc....) So, I want to build somthing different, that you don't see everyday. For hubs, my go-to would usually be King, however I have never had a set of Hopes. Anyone running these right now??? Another choice would be Dt 240's, wich I know are dependable. White Industries are also on the list for potential candidates. How about rims. Nothing wrong with good ol' Mavic 819's, but what about Stan's? Anyone running these?? I am usually the type of rider that runs whatever stock wheels came on the bike, and there is nothing wrong with my Race Lite's, but I am trying to loose some weight, and add to the reliabilty. Thanks in advance for any input guys and gals! I appreciate it!![]()

I've only been running my Hope's for a few months now, but they don't seem to roll as good as my Kings or White's did.
It might just be a perception thing, but I'm usually pretty good at judging the differences. That said, I do like the hub and am glad I went with them.

The new Crossmax SX or Shimano XT spring to mind as excellent UST alternatives to building your own. I have run the 819 successfully with out the need for goop, and they are fairly stiff for such a light rim. I am Partial to Atomlab for hubs, their pedals are bulletproof.

I've had Kings in the past, great hubs with very quick engagement. I also currently have Hope Bulbs and have been very happy with them. However if you are looking for quick engagement then look elsewhere. I have a set of Crossmax SL's and have been really happy with them also, just gotta make sure to keep the rear hub pawls lubed up. However my favorite wheels/hubs are my Industry 9's. The hubs engagement is as quick if not quicker than the King and seems to have less drag also. Overall though it is the straight pull design of the hub and the thick spokes that make for an ultra stiff yet still light wheelset. They aren't cheap but compared to say Crossmax SL's I would see no reason not to go with I-9's. I got my I-9's when they first came out for $500 so the shop could get feedback on them. I've been extremely pleased with them and I have beat the crap out of them on my RFX. Just very important to keep the spoke tension set properly. If the I-9's are out of your budget then I'd go with the Hopes.
