Default This is the mentality that trail advocacy types are fighting against

These are actual comments left in 1996 on U. S. Forest Service registration sheets and comment cards by backpackers completing wilderness camping trips:
  1. "A small deer came into my camp and stole my bag of pickles. Is there a way I can get reimbursed? Please call."
  2. "Escalators would help on steep uphill sections."
  3. "Instead of a permit system or regulations, the Forest Service needs to reduce worldwide population growth to limit the number of visitors to wilderness."
  4. "Trails need to be wider so people can walk while holding hands."
  5. "Ban walking sticks in wilderness. Hikers that use walking sticks are more likely to chase animals."
  6. "All the mile markers are missing this year."
  7. "Found a smoldering cigarette left by a horse."
  8. "Trails need to be reconstructed. Please avoid building trails that go uphill."
  9. "Too many bugs and leeches and spiders and spider webs. Please spray the wilderness to rid the area of these pests."
  10. "Please pave the trails so they can be plowed of snow in the winter."
  11. "Chair lifts need to be in some places so that we can get to wonderful views without having to hike to them."
  12. "The coyotes made too much noise last night and kept me awake. Please eradicate these annoying animals."
  13. "Reflectors need to be placed on trees every 50 feet so people can hike at night with flashlights."
  14. "Need more signs to keep area pristine."
  15. "A McDonald's would be nice at the trail head."
  16. "The places where trails do not exist are not well marked."
  17. "Too many rocks in the mountains."

Amusing, but I take it for a grain of salt. I seriously doubt that these are the people who would take their time to fight for trail advocacy. More likely kids on spring break, or first time backpackers who were drug along by frends, SO, parents, etc. Just like any group, you can't pick out the worst and call them a representative of the whole community. If this was representative, it would give us sooo much more credibility. Showing that they are selfish and inconsiderate, lacking any forethought responsibility, and common sense beyond the tiny world they call their twisted little minds.

That's pretty funny Chris, but I think the people who wrote them were just messin' around. If anybody has looked at the sign in sheet at the top of El Moro, there's some funny names and descriptions on it.

Where did this happen? It sounds as if it came from a Wilderness area adjacent to a major metropolitan area (like the Wilderness areas in the Angeles and San Bernardino National Forests).

The scary thing about these comments is that they were written by people who can vote and drive on the public highways...and reproduce!

Most of these are jokes, no doubt. The ones that probably aren't jokes are probably 6 and 13, maybe.
