Default What I learned today!

What I learned today:

Don't trust the fuel gauge on a 40 year old bug, its wrong!

Even on the side of the freeway in southern California you might know someone! Thanks Wilhelmina for stopping and making sure I was ok, that was extremely kind of you!

Cops aren't all bad- sorry Andy!-.
I ran out of gas in the fast trak. Just as I was calling AAA a motorcycle patrolman pulled behind me, slowed traffic.....I seriously was scared to get out of the car....my hazards were on but that doesn't mean much here, I was still watching cars come flying up and turn at the last moment before crashing into meneedless to say the officer made sure I was ok, wanted to know if it would start and then puts his bike behind my car and stops the fast trak by stepping into the road!!!
Then he asks if I can push the car, I say "yes sir!" and then he says I am going to stop the 91, you move the car when I say go. He then moves his motorcycle into the first of 4 lanes, raises his arms and proceeds to stop the 91! I push the bug all the way over to the shoulder, he then tells me you are on your own and takes off..that guy kicked some serious ass!!!

My father-in-law kicks serious ass also!!
Once I was safely across the freeway I called my father-in-law to see if he could help , once again, with my dilemma....here is where Willie stopped by and said hello!
I have to say that my father-in-law, Ernest, kicks about much ass as the motorcycle officer! Even though he gave me the right amount of verbal crap: "you shouldn't be driving that thing on the freeway, again!" he still was there within minutes with a gas can in hand! I feel very fortunate to have such great in-laws, both of them have been outstanding in their support of my family since we moved here. I joked with him that at least I keep some action going in the family..I am not sure he enjoyed that one

I love my wife!
I thought I had better put that in there or she will kick my butt, seriously! I was on the phone with her when the well ran dry so I heard the anger in her voice but as always she just wanted to make sure I was ok. Thanks mama!

And after all that, I was still 15 minutes early to work!!!

I love the baja bug but I have to remember I also have a 2007 Titan to drive too

See you on the trails, hopefully not the shoulder of the freeway

Fuses and an extra can of gas. Two things a bug owner should always have.

back in my youth I was a VW enthusist
Without getting too technical the fuel sensor over time gains resistance (ohms). If you have zero ohms you have no fuel. Get a new fuel sensor and never go below ¼ tank!

Default What Neil forgot to mention about this BAJA BUG

This is the 3rd time his BELOVED BUG has broken down...(in less than 1 month)

My Dad has come to Neil's rescue all 3 times...What a Lucky Guy!

Oh and I was late dropping Maddie off at school, because for some reason the 91 stopped just before Imperial.

Love ya Honey!

ps. Thanks Wille for keeping my hubby company on the 91 - I wasn't going to do it

No really: I get a bit squirmish when he drives his VW - the whole breakin down on the freeway gets to me, I'm just a loving wife that worries about her hubby - and then gets mad when it's all over and he's safe!

you need to invest in a wooden dowel. Works way better than those old fuel gauges.

Sucks that you can't tell how much gas is in your tank via the fuel gauge. In my little honda fit I seriously run all day with the gas light on. The needle goes below the empty line and I'm still fine. HONDA you ROCK!

May I also suggest a fire extingusher. I had a bug for about six months until one day I was up the 405 and somebody pulled up to me and said to pulll over your car is burnig! I guess since it was night I looked like a VW rocket ship. The VW blocks are mad from magnesium and can catch fire very easy. It was so sad I watched my VW burn down on the 405 Frwy.

Neil had a 4 door VW Rabbit (?) that did the same thing. He had Maddie in the back in her car seat - she was like 9 months old. He got off the freeway because his car was smokin, and a guy said do you need any help? and freaked out when he saw there was a baby in the car too...There Neil was standing next to his favorite RED VW with baby girl in arms watching his car go up in flames...It was a terriable day...

Neil - Maybe VW's are just not the car for you - i do think that SHINNY new Titian is though

So, the 91 was stopped for ya. That's special!

Oh, wait. The 91 gets stopped for EVERYONE!! (H8 that damn road)

Glad you made it out okay.
I once ran out of gas in my old '59 Cadillac Series 62 Flattop on the 101 right at the 405 in the middle of drive-time morning traffic, in the middle of the freeway in lane 3. I got out and wandered around in front of the car for a few minutes, wishing I had my camera with me (d'oh!) (no hazard lights on an old boat like that), eventually deciding to sit on the trunk and look into the eyes of all those folks I was causing havoc for until help came (one of those MTA trucks that cruise the freeways looking for idiots like myself). What a sight I must've been that day...
