I was a BM2(SW/SAR) in the US Navy. BM2 means Boatswain's Mate, 2nd class. (E-5 or the equivalent to a Sergeant). Pronounced "Bosun's Mate" which for some gets shortened to "Boats", a nickname that is bestowed upon Boatswain Mates that know and do their job well. It is a nickname I still carry and am called even though I have been out for a couple years.
The SAR comes from the (SW/SAR) which are additional specialties in the Navy, this one meaning Surface Warfare/Search and Rescue. The Search and Rescue swimmers in the Navy are the sea/air/land rescuers. I did maritime SAR and combat SAR. Mostly pulling downed Marines out of harms way on land, downed pilots and man overboards at sea. We were deployed via small boats, ships or helocopters. Hence: SAR_boats |

Gene is my name, "genus" is what my close friends call me since high school. "mtbkr"-self explanatory, "5" favorite number. Hey SAR boats, I served 6 years between 83-89, I was an AD2(aircraft powerplants mechanic). I figured your's had to be Navy related.

I lurked for a while on this site and it's obvious the youth are in the majority. Since I just passed the big four-five and my daughter is heading to college, I figured I qualify as an Over The Hill Rider.

found my special purpose

just one of many nicknames growing up while placing sports (some others included dirt, birdseed, ADRock, etc) .
anyway i was always a bit younger and smaller than the guys in my neighborhood and played ball with but could keep my own and hang. Usually i would go unnoticed until i scored a mad goal, make a steal or a hard tackle, etc. then someone would ask who that little guy was and they would say, "it's that kid A something" (Adam). Yes, it maps to radiohead as well and I'm a fan (saw them 3 times in show) but it was mine first ![]() now that i'm a wee bit older, i'm still a kid a heart (although sometimes too much according to my wife)

Many many moons ago I rode on an Ellsworth Truth. The first T in truth rubbed/scratched off. Soon I named my bike Ruth. Then the H rubbed/scratched off as well.
Truth became Ruth. Ruth became Rut. Rut stuck, so I started riding in the ruts on the trails. Now I'm either known as Rut or akaRut. Oh some people actually call me Andy too.
