Default New Trails in Old Places

Posting something for the first time is nerve-wracking but here goes. I wasn’t sure if I wanted to post this since it’s more of a running/ hiking thing for me but I figured it could apply to mountain biking too .

Finding new trails rocks. Granted, I haven’t been mtb’ing long enough to say that about riding since they’re all new to me on wheels and all are entertaining but as a trail runner and hiker, finding a new trail in a park you’ve been frequenting for 10+ years brings back the good old days.

Last night I went running at El Moro and although I’d heard of the Rimcrest Park entrance a few months ago I hadn’t been up there yet and it felt like walking into a new park. I know the other trails like the back of my hand and the trails on the other end are robably old news to most of you but I was really excited ‘cause this falls into “it’s the little things” box. I found a single track that’s great for running and looks hairy to ride but judging by the marks on the rocks, some of you have attempted and hopefully succeeded this trail and that's impressive. Really.

Finding this new trail opened up whole new route possibilities to the otherwise repetitive trails linked up with a couple others on the outskirts I’ve found within the last year.

How often do you guys find trails right under your nose that you didn’t know existed (mtb, hike, run, whatever ails you) in your stomping grounds or nearby enough to make you say “whoopee” like you used to?

There are a lot of trails out there, I'll be riding an unfamiliar one tonight. El Moro has a lot of trails, but unfortunately for us, some are closed to MTBing. Like in Aliso and Whiting, there are more trails open to hikes than bikes. I'd like to see more trails open up, but it's not entirely up to me. I know changes are being made at several parks now, we'll wait and see what happens.

BTW, I believe you were at the Beek's ride with The ODC group. I went on their site to lurk. If you were there at Beek's, glad you guys helped make it the success it was. Thanks and see you on the trails, Gene

Sometimes just riding an old trail on a new bike brings up a WHOLE different experience... I've ridden San Juan many times (not as much as a lot of you guys that have been riding for years, but enough in my 2 years of riding...), but single speeding it with 25 other crazy bastids one Saturday really made the trail an entirely new experience for me.

I believe you may be talking about the Deer Canyon s/t trail.....nice..but very loose....... the other trail further along the other ridge is out of bounds I took it by accident once while looking for Deer Canyon..not a well traveled trail...and it shouldn't be. Enjoy your new found fun!
