Exclamation Urgent: Veterinarian Recommendation Needed

Sorry to post such a completely non-bike thing here, but I know a lot of you live in the Lake Forest/Mission Viejo/Irvine/Orange areas. We have a very sick cat today, and having just moved into this area a couple months ago we haven't found a good veterinarian or animal hospital close by yet. Our old vet is almost an hour away, and I don't want to put the cat through that if I don't have to.

We were in the E.R. with him this morning, and I definitely need to get to get him in to see someone tomorrow. Anybody have any recommendations?

Thanks a lot folks.

This is a great place we have a cat, parrot and turtle that we take here. When we lived in San Clemente we had vet right up the street from us but still drove the pets here.

Thanks for the referrals and the good wishes.
The preliminary diagnosis/speculation (since they didn't do all the testing needed yet) is that it seems like a tumor on his spleen or intestine. We'll know a lot more tomorrow when we can get someone to do blood work, ultrasound, and all those other great but expensive tests.

I know some people are dog people, and some are cat people. My wife and I are just animal people, and this cat thinks he's a dog anyway. He's not aloof like some: He follows me around like a puppy. His name is Mooch, cause he's such a beggar, but he's given us far more than he's ever taken.

Here's Mooch, sneaking a cool nap spot under our tent when we had it set up in the yard:

Whenever we pull out a suitcase, he gets a little weird. He knows we might be going away and he won't be getting all the attention he so richly deserves. This time he climbed on top of the suitcase and didn't want to move!

Waldo, I know that HB is a bit far, but there is an emergency vet center/hospital here that does all sorts of things (I had a tour), including radiation treatment, they even have an MRI (some people hospitals don't even have one). If you need the number, let me know

Alicia Pet Clinic is where I take my dogs and my cat if I'm in that area. They're right off the 5 at Alicia, in the same shopping center as Chick's Sporting Goods (I think the cross street is Hon? There's a Chevron on the corner). They have 3 great DVM's there.

If I'm in north OC, I take them to All Creatures Critter Cottage in Costa Mesa. Another great place.

I've taken two of my dogs here for surgery. They're awesome. If it's anything serious I would take your cat here without a doubt. They also offer a type of credit account called Care Credit if the bill gets pretty high. You can make payments if needed.

We have him scheduled for later this morning at the Animal & Bird Clinic in MV (would have had him in at 8am, but they were already dealing with an emergency by the time they opened today). If for any reason that doesn't work out like we hope, we have several great alternatives.

Thanks everybody. This is very, very much appreciated.

Dr Wiekamp 949 495 5475, takes care of my pooch, He is a mobile vet, has this RV that can pretty much do it all, he did Knee surgury on one of my dogs in the driveway, and when I had to put my last dog down we were able to do it in the backyard. Why put the animals through the stress of going to the vet when the vet can come to you. He servers most of Orange County.

So far, the Animal & Bird clinic gets high marks for being caring & professional. They did some tests today that we'll get back tomorrow and decide from there how to treat him. Their approach was a nice change from the E.R.s "every test known to man and put you on a payment plan" approach. And just getting some fluids in him has helped a lot: He's about 75% of his normal self this evening, up from about 20% Sunday morning.

A couple people have PM'd asking how Mooch, our cat, was doing, so here's an update:

He's been in to the vet 3 times in about 10 days, first for a fever and then for exams to examine the lump that was discovered in his abdomen. The ever was controlled with fluids within a couple of days and with no lasting effects. The lump is, so far, non-cancerous and non-threatening, but we'll be keeping a close eye. Any signs of unusual behavior and we'll probably have him in for surgery, a.s.a.p.

The Animal & Bird Clinic staff & docs have been awesome - great service there, plus follow-up calls as needed, and they've taken as much time with us as we've wanted. Can't say enough good things about them.

Thanks again to everyone for the concern and the referrals.

Mooch looks exactly like a cat I used to own before I joined the service. His name was Mildew. I am glad Mooch is doing ok. I have 4 cats now: Josie, Gus, Funkmello, and Ernesto Gonzales Ortiz
