Default DVD Back Up/copy Software

I want to legally back up DVDs I own (regardless of how the RIAA lawyers feel about by right to make copies of something I own).

I prefer free, open source software if possible. My price cap is around $50 if I have to buy something. Any recommendations?

Google and download

1. DVD Decrypter (Free) - This will crack the code and allow you to rip the movie

2. DVD Shrink (Free) - This will compress the movie to fit on a regular DVD disk. If you're going to back up to a Dual Layer DVD, then you don't need this.

3. Nero to burn the disc or you can use DVD Shrink.

Are you on a PC or Mac? If you're on a mac, use Handbrake. SUPER easy to rip DVD's to a file and works perfectly 95% of the time regardless of the copy protection on the DVD.

edit: Just noticed they now have a Windows download. Would be interesting to see if it works as well as the mac version. Care to try it out and give us a review?

I believe newer versions of DVD Shrink will rip the DVD as well.... so its a 1,2,3 step process in one program... granted you have Nero installed since it uses Nero to burn from DVD Shrink

Sweet, I'll have to do a search for it. I didn't realize they were still updating Shrink.
