My solution for LA (and other cities): Automakers need to go a step beyond existing gas hybrid electrics and offer plug-in, hybrid electrics so most drivers can get the first 40 miles off a battery that's been charged the night before when power demand is low and cost is cheap. That moves most pollution away from the city and instead towards power plants which are highly regulated in California and increasingly supplemented by wind power. Thousands of new wind turbines are slated for Tehachipi pass, once a new transmission line goes in. These could help provide power, particularly at night, for batteries in vehicles charging on the grid.

We really just need mass transit. Taking the train to work is awesome... it gives you a relaxing experience to read the paper and get prepared for the day. When you get to work, you are refreshed.

IMO you could put in all the mass transit you wanted and everyone would still drive their cars. Californians in particular have a love of their vehicles.

They put in a huge trolley stop at SDSU the year we were graduating (finalized after) and I doubt it helped the parking situation at all. If you've got 5 classes, no locker available, and a bunch of heavy azz books, are you gonna drive your car, or lug around a suitcase on the trolley?

I realize it's different, but it's not gonna change. Cities (and the state) don't promote bike riding to work, and the commuter programs don't really offer any incentive other than maybe you won't have to drive every day and you aren't putting miles on your own car.

How about that chernobyl disaster? Another 900 years before some of the worst contaminated areas can be inhabited again. over 350,000 people had to be evacuated and most of them died of brain tumors or cancer if they didnt die instantly from all the radiation. We gotta find a way to beat the radiation to get into deep space travel.
