![]() YouTube - American Hardcore Trailer As described: Tracing punk-rock music's turbulent history from 1980 to '86, this retrospective documentary celebrates the hundreds of influential hard-core bands that paved the way for tamer acts such as Nirvana, Blink-182, the Beastie Boys, Green Day and the Red Hot Chili Peppers. Archival footage includes performances from the Circle Jerks, Flipper, Gwar, Jerry's Kids, the Replacements, the Teen Idles and Wasted Youth.

Another recommendation: Search your satellite or cable program guide for "Urgh! A Music War," a fantastic collection of punk and post-punk performances from the early '80s. Saw this flick ages ago on VHS, and I captured about half of it on my TiVo a few weeks ago. A lot of it is a bit new wave-y for my taste, but it's got great segments from Dead Kennedys, X, the Cramps, XTC and -- one of my all-time faves -- Gang of Four.

Sounds good, although I don't know if I would consider GWAR hardcore.
I did see them a couple of times though, and they were hilarious. Sleazy P. Martini rules! URGH is great and shows a really good slice of the music that was going on then. There is another documentary on the history of punk rock that is pretty darn great. It starts with The Roxy club in London where the Pistols/Clash/Damned/Pretenders all started, and then goes to America from there. The only bad thing about it is that the movie kind of gives LA punk the short shrift and focuses on the SF and NY scenes more. I believe that this new movie was made in response to the old one. |

Ahhh, more of the soundtrack of my youth--good find, Kid A! I'm heading to Amazon right after this.
Of course, no collection is complete w/o a copy of The Decline of Western Civilization. I mean, footage of X tatting each other (Exene at her hottest, btw), and the Germs telling the "family photos w/ the dead house painter" story? Classic! |

Yep, rented and watched this dvd yesterday. Vid is way cool. Real nice "history" of the start and evolution of hardcore punk and the various scenes across the entire US
Alot of bands mentioned (including one of my fav's -Zero Boys ) but in most cases very short vid clips of the bands. Some were "highlighted" more than others (e.g. Bad Brains, Black Flag, Minor Threat, etc) probably because of perceived "relevance", availability of clips and accessability of band members - but all good.Anyway, another vote for renting if you are so inclined ![]() btw- J-Dirt they do feature the D!cks (albiet very little). u know anything about that ![]()

Henry Rollins really annoys me as the "punk" viewpoint in every show about music. Henry Rollins RUINED Black Flag. Just my opinion but I saw the mighty BF many, many times in the 70's and 80's.
I do like his TV show however, maybe I am getting a little soft, now that I am 45 years old. He does have some good guests, it just when they have him on VH-1 or whatever as the punk opinion, it annoys me. I loved punk from the get go. I "discovered" it by accident from a friend and I went full on with it. I was one of very, VERY few people who actually liked punk back in the day. A lot of people say they were into it but I know it's BS because the scene was very small and dangerous. I was the kid who got chased by 14 jocks because I didn't love Night Ranger. I was the kid who was spit on at the mall by parachute pants wearin' Def Leppard fans. I was the kid who was made fun of because I had short hair. OK, I am off my soap box now... just had to vent. The DVD looks fantastic BTW, I want to get it soon!
