On the one hand, where I'm from, it's generally considered coarse and indecent to discuss sex, religion & politics with people you don't know well. Practically, I think this is because time has showed that doing so is a very good way to get yourself punched in the mouth.
On the other hand, the internet is the one way for people to find peer groups they're sufficiently comfortable enough in to discuss these volatile ideas without worrying about getting physically punched in the mouth (though the verbal equivalent looms). The way I see it, discussing the big three can be done constructively, with care & respect (for the individual you're discussing it with, not necessarily their ideas), or it can be done destructively without. The discussion of ideas, beliefs & cultures is good. Minding your manners and remembering you're talking to a human being is key. Hmmm. A lesson in religious discussion from an atheist. |
