Thumbs up career choice.

so i got to thinking today, i despise what i do now, but its not my overall goal and even them my overall goal seems pretty far away. thought it would be cool to see what you all do now, or have done, and what you really want to do. mine goes like this.

Gen. contracting for 2 years after HS
1 year of school for FF/paramedic goal, currently only an EMT-I.
the whole FF paramedic thing is killin me, so im kind of looking for a new direction, although i have a feeling ill end up in the medical field somewhere.
kind of out of work right now, so all i do is ride.

your turn. ready, GO!

i work for a large graphic design agency, more specifically on our interactive team. we handle a quite few major automotive brand accounts, here is a clue for one of them, "SHIFT_" . i do love my job, working in the design industry is great and i couldn't see myself working in any other industry. i've been in the industry since 98 and have worked at some pretty cool agencies for some pretty high end clients including, Cleveland Golf, the Orange County Fair, American Racing, Honda/Acura, Mazda, Toyota, Nissan/Infiniti, etc...

I also do quite bit of freelance design on the side.

I was self-employed in my families floor covering business for 17 years. Sold the business in June '04, spent that summer riding. I will be graduating with my BA at the end of this month, and start the teaching credential program in January. By the way, I still am installing floors, and know that I can make quite a bit more money doing that than I can teaching. The $ is not why anyone goes into teaching, right Gurp?

I'm an applications engineer designing various different bits of power stations and Oil/Gas production facilities. It sounds flashy but it isnt really. I'm pretty sure I have another objective in my life and whether I make a change or it jsut happens I'll end up doing the right thing.
Everyone thinks their job sucks at times but more often than not you're there for a reason.

I moved out here from Pittsburgh after graduating with a teaching degree about six years ago. I was offered a job teaching in Rancho Cucamonga and I've been doing that since. I'm applying for a job at Chaffey College after the new year so I can make some extra cash to pay the bills and buy a new bike.

It's hard to tell from your post but if you really want to pursue the fire fighter career don't give up. I had a friend that went through the academy, did various private emt and firefighter jobs. He kept getting passed over on city ff openings and was getting pretty discouraged. Finally he got hired on at a city and is now a captain. It took him a couple years of trying but it happened.

If you're unsure what to do, my advise would be to at least get started on a degree while you're making up your mind. You never know where opportunities will take you and having a degree could come in handy.

I am a heavy equipment diesel mechanic and welder in Santa Ana. I have also worked on marine diesels and generators and done quite a bit of auto stuff, before that I spent six years in the Navy as a Deck supervisor and SAR swimmer. I have also been a rock climbing and wilderness survival instructor, able-bodied seaman (non-military), and a congressional liason (first and last job I'll ever wear a tie to.)

As far as jobs go, I worked as a host and then server at a restaurant (Hof's Hut) for three years. Now I work part-time as a computer tech with another rider. Living at home helps out the finances right now which gives me enough cushion to be able to support my biking habit. However, I don't plan on living at home forever and I'm always looking for a way to earn more.

Currently working on a bachelors in Management Information Systems with an e-commerce track. Still about a year and a half from getting my degree. Haven't really pinned down what I want to do after college. I've always wanted to work on my own projects and be an entrepreneur in that sense but wouldn't mind working for Google or another good company.

Ryan, as calepic said - figure out what you want to do and go for it.

Ryan, my friend works for LA City FD and he told me they are going to be hiring a lot of firefighters in the near future as many of the baby boomers are retiring. Now's a good time to get in there.

I was a test engineer after graduating college. Tried to get into sales after that and quit after a month. I despised that job and the people I was working with so much. Got back into engineering soon after. I would look into mtbracer's suggestion.

You chose college according to the riding didn't you? C'mon admit it.

Currently a Senior at U of AZ. Headed to Pepperdine Law next fall. Hope to hook up with a large firm after that, possibly in Chicago or New York.

Spent almost all my money going to UCI to get a degree in Mechnical Engr, then ran out of money and decided that's not what I really wanted to do anyways. Got a job in the Plastics industry and went back to school to get my degree in Polymer Chem, now I've been promoted to Head Babysitter. Plant Manager,

I've been at it now over 30 years. I'm okay with the job, and the pay is great, but it's been a long haul.

awesome posts guys! well im only 2 classes away from my degree in fire technology, ive tested for LA, OC, and have turned in several applications for riverside and SB county CDF. ill have my degree after the next semester. in that semester ill be taking my EMT recert so i can go get a job with AMR and pay the bills while being re-introduced into the emergency medicine field. i actually started the academy but dropped after seeing that my body wasnt ready, my doctor agreed. i like the book work associated with fire technology most, i just have always really liked school, maybe ill become a teacher like jason.. nahh. like i said im pretty sure im going to end up in the medical field, i really like the human body and its various problems, especially when it envolves excessive bleeding. ive played a pretty big role in saving a few lives, it was a good feeling, i think thats what ill end up doing. again, awesome replies guys, keep um comin!
