I used to sponge as well. Been a lot of years. I used to frequent T- Street everyday on my Mike Stewart Turbo pro. I should start going again. Churchhills have a lot of dust.

My think my first bodyboard was a Morey 128 circa 1976. Finally a "performance" board that wasn't as goofy as an innertube and didn't snap like those polystyrene "ice chest" boards. Then moved up to a Morey 132 then a Mach 7-7 sometime during high school and probably a 1/2 dozen more boards over the years. I got a subscription to Body Boarding magazine and was amazed to see the moves those Hawaiians were pulling off and would record on Beta whatever channels were running footage of contests I'd happen to come across. I remember seeing Mike Stewart and Keith Sasaki in contests here in California and was so stoked to see them shred even in small conditions. Eventually took up long boarding and discovered a more laid back approach to enjoy the surf. A lot easier to paddle in now that I'm getting older and just a entirely different attitude, but surfing is still second to riding my bikes.

Figures Art would be the first to pull the "Spongers Suck" thing. It's been a few years, but I grew up bodyboarding Ventura County. Ventura Harbor, Santa Clara Rivermouth, Ventura Overhead, Silver Strand (just a few times, the local vibe was heavy back then), and Oxnard Shores. Ahhh, good times. Was lucky enough to live in Hawaii for a year and bodyboard at Sandy's every other weekend. Man, what a scene at that place!
It's interesting how bodyboarding has just sort of fallen off the map, particularly in the press. For a long time there was no American magazine. There are fewer spongers than ever! Hmmm, might be time to get back in the water. As MTB'ing came into my life, sponging became less and less a priority until I gave it up altogether a few years ago. As you get older, obviously your time gets more valuable. Driving an hour only to find crap surf, yet again (this is Cali, ain't the best waves), with 50 other people fighting over scraps. Yeah, I was over it. Now, I ride in areas where few others ride. And there are never wind issues, or tide issues, or lack of swell. Hell, I even feel better about mountain lions than I do sharks. Lmnop was a nickname given to me, and not a kind one, by some surfing buddies. The last bodyboard I had was an Elemenopee. Because I have a long last name with seemingly every letter in it, the nickname was appropriate and it stuck. Last edited by lmnop; 07-02-2009 at 08:12 PM. Reason: left out something |

I sponge, well I guess I should say I use to sponge, but not much over the past few years, 40th street in Newport was my spot in highschool and early 20's. Free time is scarce with an 8 month pregnant wife and 19 month old son at home! If I'm not at work or chasing my son, I'm trying to get on the bike! Once my kids are old enough, I hope I can get them on a sponge and bike!

Did I indeed (my quote is below)? Do we know each other?
FYI, it was a joke (see smiley^)... Des and I know each other. Also, my passion for the ocean began in the early 70's on a Morey Boogie at Main Beach (2 blocks from here). A few years ago while in Kona, I got the best wave of my life (i've surfed for 30+ years: up and down Cali, Mexico, Costa Rica, Hawaii, Indonesia). There were a few bodyboarders out there; one of them (with whom I became friends) was standing-up on his board pulling into barrels, doing vertical snaps, and aerials. I've got nothing but respect for guys who charge on bodyboards. If you're going to sound-off to someone here, at least make an attempt to know of whom you're speaking.

I hear you on the lack of time! Family time is all the time! I use to sponge 4 times a wk during college then picked up surfing. I still have my toobs board but bike takes my free time when I have any. Its closer to drive to a trail and I know I will get stoked. I do miss the drop knee and its much cheaper than the upgraditis I have with my bikes. The good ole' days.....

I used to sponge off the pretty ladies when I was younger and better looking, does that count?
![]() Have not had the bodyboard out for ooooooh ... a long time. Used to bring both, surfboard and body board. That way if it was breaking pretty good I would ride the "long board" and if it was full of walls and closed out i would ride the "sponge" ![]()

I've been an avid bodyboarder for a looong time now. Grew up bodyboarding at Seaside (Cardiff) and around La Jolla reefs. I use to make vids for 662mobb and film for No Friends back in the day. Hit me up Hilo. Zooport
isn't that far from SD especially if there's a solid south in the water.![]() Here's a Waimea Shore break clip I made a while ago. <object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/aktPxKhfQHw&hl=en&fs=1&"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/aktPxKhfQHw&hl=en&fs=1&" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object> Your helmet cam vids are sick by the way. |

I remember Danny Kim during the 80's doing snap turns and throwing huge sprays, multiple spinners in the barrel, floaters, all while standing on a body board.
