Today I was attempting to transfer pictures from my compact flash to my computer. I've done this many times with no problems.

I can't figure out why things have changed but now I can't transfer or open the data.

I'm using a high-end SanDisk Extreme III 2.0 GB CF which has never given my any trouble. For some reason, all of the files on the CF are now .JPF not .JPG. I did find this in a search:

JPF is the file extension for a JPEG 2000 file, which, at its most basic, is the next generation of JPEG (aka JPG).

I don't have the correct software to open these files. There were already about 50 pictures on the CF which used to be .jpg files. I shot about 180 pics on Friday and now this.

I'm shooting with a Canon Digital EOS Rebel XTI and even the camera won't read the files for preview???

Any ideas?

I know a good amount about computers, but I have never heard about JPF before.

No idea, I would check camera setting though. I dont know much about Canon SLR but I have a feeling that you can set that as an option. I do see that Apple Quicktime can open that extension so maybe that will let you get them opened and then save them as a jepg.

I can't see anyway to lock the card.

On three different computers, I can view the file data in what appears to be a "tile" format. Each files is labeled with a typical " HLF ^2080.JPF " script.

There are approx 200 of these files on the CF which jives with how many pictures I thought were there.

I loaded the CF card back in the camera and took four photos. All recorded as .jpg and can be viewed with the camera LCD. I put the CF in the computer slot and all four came up easily as .jpg thumbnail views. All were easy to copy over to the H.D. The 200+ .JPF files are still there.

JPEG is a lossy format, meaning that, to compress JPEG images, pixel data is thrown away. Every time a JPEG file is saved, more data is thrown away, and the image degrades more. When a digital camera creates a JPEG file it loses quality. When the camera�s JPEG file is opened in an image editor, touched up, and resaved, it loses more quality. And so on and so on.
The JPEG file format also doesn�t do much beyond store pixels. Originally devised a decade ago solely as a format for long-term archival of photographs, JPEG doesn�t answer modern image format requirements like transparency, meta-data, and color management.

I've read through the manual and can't find anyway to establish .JPF as the default file system.............

As far as I know, the Rebel XTI only records JPEG or RAW formats. Man, I have no idea what might have changed your photos to .jpf but something has gone wrong somewhere.
Maybe you could try opening the photos in Digital Photo Professional and exporting them as JPG files. In Digital Photo Professional select all photos and go to File/Batch Process.

ok this sounds dumb but it works sometimes, click file rename and add .jpg to the end of the name

Totally, I was going to suggest that too. He's got 200 pictures though. carpal tunnel..

I use Irfan View to arrange my pics for posting, it has a file type for JPG 2000 so I think it can read these. If so you can batch convert them over to JPG's using this program. It's a free download, as well as the plug ins. I hope this helps.

Oh, you can read them if you rename the file?! well, then open up a DOS window and "ren *.JPF *.JPG ^ Done.

I tried to rename the file with a .jpg extension and it created two new files with the same .jpg name (?)

Same thing happened on two computers. It would not open on either computer with Windows Fax & Picture Viewer or Corel Paint Shop Pro Photo XI (which is supposed to support jpeg2000)

I am pretty sure that Picasa can read *.JPF files. I know for sure it can read RAW files. Here's the link: Picasa
You could import those files then export them as JPG in one easy step. If you have Photoshop then that would be the ideal but I am assuming you don't? Anyway hope that helps.

I was gonna suggest Irfanview. I used it back when I was one of Bill Gates' bitches. It's useful and free. If you can't get it, you can bring it over and I'll stick the card into my Mac. Have readers for CF and SD.
