Question NBR: 55 freeway

As I was driving home tonight I noticed some thing interesting on the 55 freeway between the 5 and the 91, there are no yellow lines distinguishing the carpool lane from the regular lanes. WTF?

that is all

A little birdie told me that they were going to make the carpool lane just like the 22 freeway. That would allows you to go in and out of the carpool lane at any time.

a birdie told me...

I can be a passing lane, until you get caught by CHP.

It's called a continuous access lane. This is how carpool lanes are in most areas. Socal has always been different.

UMMM .... yeah.

SoCal is the only place i've seen separated carpool lanes.

Back in Oregon, we didn't need carpool lanes at all

We had Carpool lanes in Virginia/Maryland that were only enforced durning rushhour and during other times and weekends they were open for all to use. It was pretty nice.

Yea, in Nor Cal the car pool lane is just the lane to the far left. You can go in and out of them as you please. There are no double yellow lines or entrances and exits in specific areas like here.

It was in the register a few weeks ago. Basically it goes back to the 91 express lanes, there was an restriction that maintained the freeway had to have 12' wide shoulders and continuous striping. It was around the same time the wall was built along the five. Long story short is that since the OCTA bought the 91 lanes from the private agency all previous restrictions could be re-written, took a while to push it through cal-trans and voila!! open access. What is really cool is that Solo in the Car pool is a no point ticket but crossing the double yellow is a point so the worst that could happen is a fine.

Here is the real Article;
