Unions, and corrupt politics are responsible for the inability for the american auto industry to compete with it's foreign competitors. The 70's should have tought them a lesson to diversify their holdings and prepair themselves for the obvious energy crisis of the 21st century. The american economic boom of the 20th century was built on cheap oil and fossil fuels for energy. The government has let unions crush the manufacturers to the point of no return a long time ago. The majority of every dollar spent on an american vehicle goes to the pension and health care of it's employees and retirees. I suspect they have gotten by with strong truck and suv sales along with goverment subsidies. Yet at the same time the government will push them to end a labor strike with the union and throw them a bone that prolongs and secures their mediocrity. With the higher cost of oil the slower truck and suv sales are going to crush them. Also keep in mind that the cost of other fossil fuels are rising and the majority of electricity in the US comes via burning fossil fuels. So not only are their labor, healthcare,pention, and utilities/overhead increasing dramatically, but their sales are in rapid decline. IMO the finger can be pointed directly at the politicians that no longer support those who elected them into office, but rather those who contributed to their campaign.
We invented the automobile,and are the worlds largest consumer of them and can't manufacture them on our own soil for profit. I fear with NAFTA that what befalls the auto industry will trickle down. However I'm optimistic that when the US citizens hit our collective bottom democracy will rear it's head again and restore this country back to it's rightful place as the second greatest country on Earth.

I agree that our auto industry is due for a tragic demise. Union workers in all categories IMO make WAAAAYYY too much money for being just average workers. Its like people working in the civil service - they pretty much can't be let go until they do something completely insane. My mom used to work for the city of Torrance street department. They had trash truck drivers that had serious vision impairment, etc, etc. Anyway, unions are whack. I understand why they started, but have spun way out of control. Production line workers installing shoddy door panels shouldn't be making 27 bucks an hour...
