Thanks for the pics!

I must admit: They are a bit depressing.

I have tried to climb Whitney twice.
1st attempt- A relative became ill before we took our first step.
2nd attempt- The National Weather service forecast 75 degrees and clear skies.
I guess they forgot to mention the humidity, rain and thunderstorms...

I hope to try again next year...

keep an eye out for snowy/icy weather. you probably already know about it, but the whitney portal board is the place to go for all the info.

Nice T. This was like attempt #3? Glad to see you finally summited it and didn't back out.

Nah, second time. First time was last year. We went way too early in the season and the top section where I was most nervous about was iced over. We also tried to do it in one day. One LONG day. I got pretty sick because we didn't acclimate.

I've tried twice and been shut down by weather. One time, we got 1/2 way up the 99 switchbacks when we saw the storm rolling in. We turned around just in time, they had white out conditions on the top and later we found out search and rescue had to retrieve a few victims.

It's a patient mountain, it is still waiting for me.

Yes, a Marmot also called a whistle pig due to the sound they make. I would be interested in booking a date for next year, does anyone know the process? How long is the list, any waiting?
"Whistle pig?" Nice, I'll have to remember that. My wife & I were hiking up in Kenai Fjords NP earlier this month and it took us a while to figure out who was whistling at us!

The Reign would've been sweet on some sections, and straight suicidal on others. LOL.

Default Brings back memories

My first and only attempt (so far) was late June 1978, the 99 switchbacks were covered in snow. We never made the summit but were lucky enough to spend one night on the side of the trail with snow up to our knees with a Spanish climber who had a whole can of Coleman fuel which he shared (it would of been a rough night without enough fuel to melt the snow for the freeze dried dinner). My favorite memory was descending the chute, it was much quicker going down than up. Here is an article on the descent, give it a try if you ever find yourself needing a quick way down.

I tried to take my wife to breakfast at the Whitney Portal in April to commemorate my 30 year anniversary of the failed attempt but the road wad closed (there's alway next year).

A little sore in the quads and calves but nothing major. I thought my knees would be sore the next day from descending but everything feels great.

Thanks, we're hoping to have weather like your trip. We are prepared for some crappy weather but won't push it if it's too bad.

good luck, dman. if you're going up the mr, i would at least consider going down the main trail- more miles, but a lot safer/easier.

Thanks for the photo's. I'm envious of anyone that can go over 12,000 ft.
Beautiful photo's.
I get scared any higher than that.
