For me the wierd "sport" is Men's Synchronized Diving. I'm positive the skill level is off the charts, but I'd prefer more than 100 people worldwide participate before it is called a sport.

^^To be an Olympic contender in any sport (regardless of how 'hokey' it is viewed as) must take a huge amount of sacrifice, commitment and talent. I think respect is due no matter what. Plus, some of these sports are national past times or ingrained culturally in other societies, so it's no wonder that they seem "foreign".

so since sex is covered I will move on to violence. I always thought they should take all the gold medalists, leave one hand in a coffee can full of cement all night and then let them all at each other in a large ring with a drain in the middle to sort out amongst themselves who the real winner is.
It was Hemingway who said Bullfighting, Auto Racing , and mountain climbing are the only true sports; everything else is just a game. |

That's called Dressage....and happens to be a highly advanced form of horsemanship. It's perfect synchronization between man and animal...and it's extremely difficult to get to that level. It's apparent you've never been around a horse in your life...which is fine...but never discount what you don't understand (especially at olympic levels). http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zKQgTiqhPbw

Dressage is a difficult sport. What you must not have seen, or caught is that the horse and rider have a specific course that they must complete--it's not just random walk/trot (and I'm sure there was some cantering involved). The rider must know the course, and get the horse to perform in specific areas of the arena, doing specific tasks in each area, while looking pretty
![]() If you think it's something as easy as underwater basket-weaving, then you must have not ever ridden a horse. To get the horse to bend and more in those specific ways, it takes a LOT of leg cues (most guiding of horses, when at that level is NOT done with the reigns). And, if you think that is easy, then you should try the training program most riders do, which is riding without any irons (stirrups for you Brokeback mtn types). But, I do have to agree that when you don't understand what is going on in dressage (even when you do sometimes), it's a bit like watching paint dry. Bring on the jumpers! ![]()

okay. there are lots of games/hobbies that require skill, e.g., billiards, darts, and ballroom dancing. i just don't think everything needs to be in the olympics. you to need to cross a higher threshold of blood/sweat/tears. to me, most of this first week is just a warm-up for track and field.
and, sorry, horses aren't olympians (what next- frisbee dogs?). |
