Default mtb, safer than....

snowboarding tops the list when it comes to outdoor recreational injuries, accounting for nearly 25% of all non-fatal injuries annually, followed by sledding (11 percent); hiking (6 percent); mountain biking, personal watercraft, water skiing or tubing (4 percent)

Wow, good find. Now I got more ammo to make the family relax.

Before I left on my bike tour I took out additional insurance and my insurance company doesn't list biking (of any kind) as a high risk activity. So my cost wasn't much at all. I had to sign up for a year though.

What's interesting is that they include snow skiing under other... where it takes up 61% of the 39.7 % other category, which to me puts it at 24.2% and on par with Snowboarding... Why did they leave it in the "other" category?

Probably because percentage wise only Old Farts and Fartesses (is that a word?) with brains and self preservation instincts are the ones that still ski, (very few, as a percentage of all snow mountain lift users) whereas snowboarders, percentage wise, are still young and dumb and still think they are immortal, with attendant injuries that insurance companies have to pay out claims for.

Trust me, it's not safe to extrapolate data from actuary tables. It takes hard data to support and back up the numbers, something the Insurance Commission keeps a close eye on.

I think Snowboarding is up there because half the kids up there think they are Shaun White or the next one. To many time do you see people who have trouble on bigger runs yet still fell the need to hit that jump and that rail. I wouldn't even touch jumps until I could pretty much ride all the trails in BB with ease.

The best part is I was hurt due to someone who was on a run they shouldn't have been on.

my elbow's still not quite right after falling on in snowboarding back in february!
The demographic aspect of snowboarding definitely makes a lot of sense in proportion to the amount of injuries. Eventually all those older, wiser skiers are just going to start gettting old and dying up there - then you'll see the skiing percentile increase...

Just sit in the lodge, have a beer, and watch the ski patrol haul the injured people off the mountain - that's the safe thing to do
