my sisters always tellin me about the best western up in sb. says it pretty nice and its right on the beach. I've stayed at the Four Seasons(not that i'm recomending it lol) and The Montecito Inn in Montecito which is right before sb. not on the beach but it's nice and has a small town feel. hope that helps

Hotel Oceana is a good one in SB on Cabrillo/beach. West Beach Inn is another good one on the beach. If you want a B&B, try Cheshire Cat Inn, it's near Mission and State.

I've stayed a few times @ Harbor View in, just north of State on Cabrillo. Nice play and fair prices, considering. http://www.harborviewinnsb.com/

The Holiday Inn express in Carpenteria is great, and they have amazing cinnamon rolls for breakfast!

If you have the cash, go to the San Ysidro Ranch:

However, Fess Parker's Doubletree Resort is nice too. It's right on the beach and is close to downtown. You can't beat it.

It all depends on what you want to do.
