I sold my DSM to the junk man to be crushed, same thing that happened to my Volvo. What I am trying to say is that front wheel drive cars are simply limited, although VW is about as good as they come. It's when platforms that are intended to have 35mpg base models are hopped up it's impossible to erase the econobox DNA. Personally I like rear drive with independent suspension like BMW a close second is dedicated AWD like subaru, but I think we would all rather have some of this.

I cant help but remember an old hard on from my school days; A concept car called the GT-90 was the inspiration behind the ford GT we have today. It also conspired to set other manufacturers to examine the feasibility of quad turbos which as we all know fuels the ubercar Bugatti Veyron.

Pity that concepts are rarely true to life, but if they were we would have a four cylinder Z car instead of the endless variations of Nissan's corporate V-6.

Careful with big tourque through an IRS. The pumpkin on my '79 450 SE was fine with 400 or so, but much more than that and they tend to implode.

How do you make 400 lbs-ft on a 'Benz? Yank the motor and trans and stick a 429 mated to a C-6 in it!

Wish I could find the pics....

If I ever make a bunch of money after I graduate college, this is what I want to do. I already spend to much time scanning craigslist for a nice salvage titled Miata to strip apart Unfortunately it doesn't help that I don't really know anything about vehicle maintenance. I can tune a mean derailleur though! I'm really tempted to drive my parents auto '05 Civic out to Willow Springs one day and toss it around

A lot of crashing going on though...is this just the nature of amateur racing because I don't think my back (or my wallet) could impacts like that all the time. Still looks ridiculously fun. Probably why I'm doing more criteriums.

Drag racing? Meh...

I run close to 300HP in my 3, 1st and 2nd are kind of useless on most tracks. On the streets of willow, 2nd was mostly wheelspin exiting tight turns- without the limiter would be interesting. Even 3rd gear on high speed exits you are pretty much feathering the throttle to slide the front of the car out to the edge of the track. Wheelspin = increased lap times. AWD would solve the issue.

My Corrado made similar power and it, too, was a joke in the lower gears. But it was a shoe-in for burnout contests!

How often do you make it to the track? I've been trying to get back out there for a while since I sold my last "fun" car. but I'm looking into picking something tossable up shortly, so maybe an STR racetrack weekend is in order?

how much power did youir corrado make at 22psi? did it make 500whp. just because it can handle the boost doesnt mean it will flow enough to make the power.

Huh? How on earth would a 1.8 SOHC 8V make 500whp on 22psi?!

Take 8 valves, a cam, and a little displacement out of the DSM and see how it does.

I said it made similar power to *the Mazdaspeed 3*, and it was too much for FWD. And PS, it raped EVO's and STI's from a roll...so it was decent enough for me. The best dyno run netted ~230whp and ~240wtq. That was with a stock, gasket-matched head and completely stock bottom end.

102+ trap speeds from a very basic 4 cyl engine first sold in 1975. VW used the same block and head from the very first Rabbits and Sciroccos, all the way into the late 1990's. You can mix and match soooo many of them. Makes finding parts easy!

This is how you make power and make use of it! It's even 2wd!

Other than the number of valves, it's easy to make 500+HP with a 1.8L engine. Now making it last is a whole different ball game.

Track days with my daily driver - 2 times a year. But, I ran my first real race - a 6 hour NASA enduro this past June at Buttonwillow to work towards my competition license. So now I want to run more race events. But my company has free employee track weekends at Laguna Seca that I'll still show up for.

Here's my little slice of heaven, and what I'm typically dealing with when not obsessing over mountain bikes:

That's a 2005 Subaru WRX wagon, with a full STI drivetrain (tranny, brakes, rear end, DCCD, etc.) Fully built EJ25 STI long block with forged internals, Kelford AVCS 272/272 cams, GT35R.82 rotated turbo, methanol injection, hydra stand-alone ems, and everything else besides the kitchen sink.

I'm on a break-in tune at the moment, without AVCS (subaru's variable valve control), and on wastegate pressure (15 psi), and it's making 374awhp. Once we turn up the boost past wastegate pressure (somewhere in the realm of 28-30psi), and start running methanol, it should make an easy 550awhp, and be good for 10's.

Yeah Like an RX-7 with an Ls-1 stuffed in it, not as blendable as a station wagon but those can be pretty fast too...
