I like carb engines but I love mechanical diesels. No silly electronics, no spark plugs, and they will run on just about any petroleum except gasoline.
screw the ECUs, ICMs, and PCMs. Give me a Cummins, Cat, Leighman, or Detroit. Anyone besides me notice that what the US Gov't did to cars in the late 60s and early 70s is the same thing as what they are doing to diesels right now? (i.e. putting all sorts of requirements on them that will cause less power and more complications) |

Its funny you say that Chris, diesels are getting regulated more and more. Its is basically crude fuel but it cost more. But the EPA likes to say they pollute more than Gas cars.It funny, the old Diesels had a manual shut off, thats a good sign when you have to have a way to shut of a car when the Ignition key fails.Vacuum Pumps
My opinion is; they should go after the industry's that account for 80% of pollution. But if they did that they would not get the big campaign fund $$$$$$$$$$$$$.I dont know diesels real well. The one thing I do know is they are superior to Gas.

Well, the newer complicated diesel engines make a lot more power in stock form than their mechanical counterparts (look at the 5.9 Cummins). Fuel economy has gone down the drain, though. Even if you look at some of the more modern common-rail Cummins engines, the requirements to reduce emissions (and the desire to reduce noise) continues to kill economy. For the 2004.5 model Dodge with the Cummins engine, they added a third injection event - great for noise and emissions, crappy for economy. So that's our situation with diesels, we can either get good economy OR reduced emissions, not both (or at least not as good of economy if the emissions output wasn't reduced).

'86 Dodge Charger Shelby edition (2.2 Turbo). Fuel pump quits on me in the parking lot at work and I walk to Pep Boys (closest thing) and buy a fuel pump. I swap it out in the parking lot (in tank pump) and the car starts but won't continue to run. So I go back to Pep Boys and repeat the process: same problem. I explain there are two pumps for this year car: a 5 lb pump for the carbureted version and a 55 lb pump for mine.
Them: "This is the pump we have listed for your vehicle." Me: "You have the wrong part, then." So I tow it to their "shop" and they keep it for a WEEK changing everything from the PCM to the computer. They call me at the end of the week and tell me to come get my car because they can't fix it. What!? Morons. Fortunately, they didn't charge me anything. So I tow it to the dealer, who replaces the fuel pump with the correct one and it's fixed the next day. They did charge me up the a$$, though. Stupid Pep Boys. I won't even set foot in one anymore. Those 2.2's went like a bat outto hell, though.

No, it's a 64' Lister Jaguar. Pretty trick little light weight car for the period. It ran in the TransAm series with the other V8 powered cars of the time. Front runner too! It's pretty funny looking with the swoopy body lines and the skinny tall tires. You steer the car with the rear wheels(drift) than the front. But, there are a couple of Unser pikes peak sprint cars in my shop right now. |

We have more than our fair share of "Shadetree" shops here in town, best one I had was an older escort came in on teh hook, Kinda tried to run, but as soon as yuou touched teh gas It died. After its written up the customer tells me "Yeah the engine is just been rebuilt over at so and so and they cant get it to start, they have been trying for two weeks just to get it to stay running....." Well, of coarse worst case scenario comes into my head. So I finish up everything else I had going, and honestly, I took more as well before getting into it. Two mornings later I dive in, one minute later its running, and I am driving down the road. They left the Intake tube off the MAF. I love how those ones play out. I decided to be nice and only charge half the Diag on that one, but the insisted on tipping me the rest. I thought that was pretty cool.
