Default Burning Man?

Hi all,

A friend of mine has invited me to join him and some friends for the annual Burning Man in Nevada this year. I know nothing about the festival, aside from the fact that we'll be entirely self-supported and that two of our friends will be tying the knot during the week. So, has anyone here attended BM or do you know anyone who has? Thanks for your help, as I'm still undecided as to whether I want to go.

Andrew

Hmm, never heard of it. Checked the web site, interesting.....

The weeklong gathering culminates on the Saturday before Labor Day. It is celebrated with the burning of a massive wooden man, who is about 40 feet in height. The burning is supposedly symbolic of the renewal of life. Guerilla street theatre, performance art, artistic theme camps and music are prevalent throughout the Burning Man Festival in Nevada. The largest interactive theme camps can be found on the Esplanade, which can be considered the “Main Street” of Black Rock Desert Nevada.

These theme camps have become popular attractions in Nevada. For example, the Thuderdome Camp was inspired by the Mad Max movies. This is where contestants can perform mock battles in a geodesic dome. When you get hungry, proceed to the Pancake Playhouse, where you will be served, you guessed it, pancakes! For a bit of humor, visit the 7 Sins Lounge. Is there something you have been feeling guilty about? The “church” will gladly give you a “Get Out of Hell, Free” card. You can also take a spin on the 7 Sins Spanking Wheel and pay for you sins in advance! Speaking of sin, are you interested in developing your sensuality? Well, then, head over to the Ascension Tribe which describes itself as a “sacred, sensual place for ritual and workshops that elevate the energies of the soul.”

This sounds really interesting, and it seems like i've heard/read something about it before.

The theme is after an ancient Druid harvest ritual, as I recall. There was a great horror novel+movie (late 70s or early 80s) having to do with this called "The Wicker Man".

If you go, Andrew, please tell us about it!

Thanks all!

My buddy, who will be going for the first time too, tells me that it's like a current day Woodstock. Free expression and all that jazz. I suppose hippies go hand-in-hand with all of that. As for my experience with hippies, they're okay. I once dated a hippy back in college for a few months: it was cool, but she also bathed on a regular basis.

Haha, I'll let you know if I end up going. As for photos and RR, perhaps somewhere not so "G" rated.

DOOOD!! GOO!! I've only heard stories and seen pics from the actual burning man and my brother went one year and said it was amazing.

They have Burning Man decompression (an after party type thing) in L.A. every year and I've gone three years I think and it is pretty crazy fun. Lots of art and just a bunch of straight up weird shit. They play a lot of cool music and a lot of techno/house stuff so be ready to dance your ass off.

There were a lot of gay people there too for whatever reason? I don't care, the more people the merrier. Also lots of really hot girls walking around in more or less no clothing, unfortunately the no-clothing thing is open to everyone which can be bad too. At the same time there are a lot of old people (compared to me) and by old people I mean like couples in their fifties and they are all dressed up and that's a bit odd but it seems like anything goes there.

The people there were far from being my crowd but I still have so much fun every time. Just go and experience something you won't find anywhere else.

Default Lots of old people...?

Ouch! I am 50 amd don't think of myself as 'old people'. However, my niece has gone twice and is hooked. My husband's college roommate went - clearly an old person, and loved it too. It is a tough enviroment - dirty, dusty, sand storms, hot, dry. But, very cool stuff happening by any age standard!

Old, compared to me as I stated. I'm only 21 so don't worry, it's all relative.
