Anyone know a good shop to replace missfiring plugs or do I replace the 215k vehicle?

nothing off hand but will it just not budge? it's an aluminum head so the threads might be cross threaded, did you put it in last? a shop might be able to put a helicoil in

worse comes to worse if the shortblock's still holding good compression you can just buy another head ![]()

PB Blaster..... Spray this wonderfull magic rust attacker down into the spark plug hole, let it soak overnight, then try again. Also, when you go to try, dont just pull on your ratchet, get a breaker bar, and whack it with your hand, give a pretty good whack it will probably come right loose after that.

Hey Gabe I actually have a set of those sockets that boats posted above. I bought them but haven't used them yet. I can go pick up your bike and I'll drop off the sockets so you can attack your spark plug.

if you end up stripping the threaded hole, you can do this:\
buy 1/2 inch(diam) by 1 inch(long) bolt, take to machine shop to hollow out to whatever you rplug diameter is and thread the inside of the now-hollow bolt. Then bore your new plug hole to 1/2 inch diam. Your hollowed out threaded bolt will work like a shim. gave me another 75k on my 86 u runner. |

If it has 215k miles on it and it's misfiring, it may not be the plug. Could be a weepy headgasket or something in the ignition system (power stage, wires, etc).

Or, instead of making the shim, and paying that much for a machine shop, you could just buy the KIT that already has those made up. There not helicoils, but they are a solid insert that is threaded, and then the tool that comes with it expands on end int the head so they dont move afterwords. Quote:
Unfortunatly those arent going to help with a sparkplug that is stuck, unless the stanction portion has been rounded, I have that Very set, works great on rounded nuts/bolts..... But I actually end up using it more for those wonderfull customers that have lost there wheel lock keys!!!! |

everytime I see those kits I always wonder how to keep the drill / tap swarf from going into the cylinder. I don't think I could sleep at night if I did that with the head still on the engine. (but I understand people do it all the time) |

A couple here in town I know that will have no worries about trying that, and if they get it out, they are also capable of doing the inserts th repair the threads if needed. Probably best just to grab your phone book, and call up the Ma and Pa shops, those are the guys that will usually get into that type of repair, just tell them what you have, whats happening and se what they want for getting the plug out. They will probably tell you they cannot gaurantee the hole will not be damaged, but you already know that, worth a shot to make a few calls.

I was thinking just that, last few cars I had come in that had this issue, I let soak for a while with the PB, and wrapped them loose with teh 3/8 impact. Its so nice having tools such at that at hand |
