Thumbs down Crazy Mountain BIker?

So I was in Irvine to take care of some stuff yesterday afternoon and at 5:30 I figure I'll make my way to Path and "wait out the traffic" before head home.

I was driving north on Redhill and saw a mountain biker on a SC Blur booking. As I stop at a red light that guy weaved through cars to get to the intersection....nothing unusual and all of sudden he dashes across a gap in traffic and ran the red. My jaw dropped and could not believe my eyes....did he have a death wish? Shouldn't bikers obey traffic law because it's the safe thing to do?

So next red...SAME THING....and next and next until I lost him right by 5 which he must ran all 5 red lights there.

I heard people complaining about roadies but this dude is flat out crazy!!!!

Anyone else seen him?

Sticks and stones may break my bones but cars will kill me! Not to mention breaking the law.

Care will kill you???

Breaking the law is that much of a concern?
- If your city requires that your bike be licensed, is it?
- Do you ever ride your bike at night on city streets without front, rear, and side reflectors, along with a front light? (I'm told that some cities require rear lights)
- Have you ever ridden on the wrong side of the street (opposing traffic)?
- Have you ever not followed the recommended pressures indicated on your bike tires? (Ok, that's not a legal issue, but just a check of your anal retentiveness.)

Hey Lee

Breaking the the law is always my concern....wait did that come out right?

Anyways I have always follow the law to very last bit......90% of the time based on statistic on 40% of the time spend on bike instead of car which only 30% of that will count due to on road off road guidelines with error margin of + - 10% during a given period of time on 1 of my 4 bikes. This is following county transportation code section 3, chapter 13, paragraph 69.

But this dude was running red on major streets during peak traffic. I can see cars very close to T-Boning him. The cars are going the normal 40-60mph.

speaking of the law....

i love how people complain so much about people breaking this new cell phone law

Isn't speeding a worse offense? Yet 90% of drivers speed.

People are not always right.
People make laws.
Therefore, laws are not always right.

It's basic logic.

That having been said...I used to work as a bike messenger downtown, and not even the messengers ran reds like that. It's one thing to be riding in traffic lanes and then make a "diagonal" cross if it's clear, but it's another entirely to blow through perpendicular signals at high speed.

I hope this guy is a future Darwin award winner.

Though I wouldn't wish harm upon anyone, I generally have little sympathy for people who get killed or maimed due an obvious lack of personal judgement. The situation described above would probably fall into that that category.

Traffic laws are generally passed to promote the safety of all people who use the roads. They are not always perfect, and sometimes get co-opted into municiple cash cows or to allow politicians feel like they are doing something to solve a non-problem.... but blowing thru redlights at highspeed is just stupid.

Isn't the real concern that this "crazy person" would cause an accident not actually involving them, but innocent people who might weave/brake to potentially miss this idiot

Technically a Bicycle is considered a vehicle correct? I know its possible to get a speeding ticket on a bike.. so im sure you can get in trouble if they caught you running a red
