Default Norton AV bites

I have had repeated issues with Norton Anti Virus.
The latest tonight. Working away on the PC ( I know, get mac), and up pops a box, " Norton update requires a restart" and asks if I want to re-start.

Well, I click NO, like this will make a difference, and POOF, off goes the computer to re-start and me losing everything I've worked on the last 20 minutes.

My question is, what other AV might the STR folks recommend? As Norton is not getting a renewal.

1. Trend Office Scan
2. Symantec AV Corporate or Enterprise (same AV engine as Norton, less suck)
3. AVG (mentioned above).

Just one more reason to not use Norton AV. My main problem with it has always been that it consumes a huge amount of processing power. My notebook saw a noted increase in operating speed once I dumpted Norton for AVG.

Agreed on #2. We have it deployed to over 600 workstations and laptops without any issue.

Thanks,

Mott

Both McAfee and Symantec have an enterprise solution. We went with Symantec as we already have a relationship with them and the client software didnt seem to drive the users crazy with pop ups like McAfee did.

I would recommend AVG since it is free and does work great. I have it on both of my home PCs and have had no problems.

At work we use CA antivirus and spyware defender and it is another good program that does not suck up a lot of system resources.

AV's have become so intricate and complex that they tend to slow down computers, in the process of monitoring and scanning everything coming in, going out, phishing sites, worms/trojans, back doors, etc. It's crazy! For novices and home users, if running on a relatively new machine with a fair amount of resources and processing power, running the likes of N360 ,NIS 2008 or McAfee aren't bad subscription based products. They're a little sloppy in the way of sucking resources but other then that, not bad. Yes, corp editions work best but not everyone has access to them and can't get them unless they buy multiple licenses or has a connection to a network to push from. AVG is great and pretty seamless but like anything else that's free, there's always a catch. With AVG (and NOD32), if you use Outlook to communicate with, it adds an annoying signature at the bottom of every email sent out. It's their way of self-promoting. If being used for business, comes across as tacky and very mom and pop'ish. Personally, I don't use anything except for some common sense and logic. Clean for a long time!

BTW, lot of updates upon completion require a reboot. At the risk of sounding sarcastic, you should save your work more frequently. Losing data is no one's fault but yours.

I have BitDefender and it seems to be working well on our home pc's (no viruses and doesn't seem to add noticeable overhead to my pc)

Dump Norton......Get Nod32 its seamless, scans faster that Norton, been using it for over a year. Do not recommend Norton or McAfee

Actually I disagree.
It shoud NEVER EVER shut off or re-start w/o me saying so.
It was just an email to a friend, but that is not the point.
The point is that I have had nummerous issues with Norton, and this is only the latest in a slew of them.
Hogging resources is a biggie, and I have what I consider a decent PC. 2G of ram, and the hardware to back it up.
I have had to un-install and re-install Norton at least 3 times in the last 3 years. IMO, it just needs to work, work right and be transparent. period.

The new '08 that I just updated to ( free from norton) has a box that pops up and says that a "shared symantec component needs to shut off". I bet everyone can guess what Norton said, " uninstall and re-install".
I will not do this again, I will replace this poorly designed program with something else. They may not realize that my time is valuable to me.
I have spent more time fixing NAV in the last 4 years than repairing my car.
My car has has 0 repairs, so no time spent.
Rant over.

Thanks for all the advice, keep it coming if you have it as my NAV subscription has expired.

I find that all Norton software is poor. Norton Ghost is another worthless product. It must be a corporate thing - make money from what used to be a good name but invest nothing in the product.
