Ok, I didnt read this at all, just the Original post. So if someone else already said this I apologize.
The law DOES NOT SPECIFY that your handsfree device must be wireless. Speakerphone functions qualify for the law while your driving, answering your phone on the speaker is allowed, its the holding your phone to your head that is the problem. The Local sherrif has told me that they will be looking for those who are talking on the phone holding it to there ear, and those who are talking with the phone in there hand. How he put it was basically, you can answer the phone, you can Dial the phone, but you need to set it somewhere once you have done so while you continue to talk, if you are using a headset, and you keep the phone held in your hand while driving, then you are still guilty of not having both your hands on the wheel while driving. Personally, Bluetooth is cool, but I ahve tried more than a couple headsets, and there just too much of a Pain for me to get another wireless. SPecially when I can get a very comfy, very functionable wired earpeice for ten bucks, that has beter clarity, One button operation, and I can just leave it in the car, and not ahve to worry about charging it up. On a side note, Jack FM is giving away free headsets!!! |

Every new phone comes with a wired earpiece. Time to dig it out of the box and play secret service. Personally I don't use the phone enough to justify a bluetooth earpiece. Putting it on while driving is probably just as much of a pain as a wired one. Personally I'd go with the speaker route. Using bluetooth also cuts your phone's battery life considerably.

A while ago I went looking for an ipod plug....my new truck came without one. (very annoying) Then in the middle of that I started considering the handsfree kits...well....if you price out the new stereos, you'll find many with bluetooth built in and ipod connections. So basically.... (for me I stripped out and rewired the whole thing BUT) I found it cheaper to get into a new headset (stereo headset) that runs through the car speakers than to start looking at all of the accessories. I needed my ipod running so...it all fell in line. The average stereo these days starts at 250 bucks.... a jawbone is around 100??? I'd rather have the thing in the dash than hanging off my head personally...

This shining turd of a law a great example of useless "feel good" legislation. The news has been pointing out all morning that its still legal to txt message while driving along with a whole host of other things (like changing your clothes, eating, knitting, etc) that you can still do while driving.
Personally, the cops shouldn't need a specific law on the books to enforce. They can already cite you for reckless operation. If you're on the road driving like a jack-ass (regardless of whether or not you are on a phone), they should just pull you over and cite you for reckless op. Problem is, that is open to officer discretion, and hence would result in a flood of lawsuits... so we get stupid laws like this. Wonder how long it will be until they pass a law that we have to have both hands on the wheel at all times; 10 and 2???? It will be like the seat belt law.... they'll enforce it heavily for the next couple of months, but I bet a year later, most people will still be driving while yaking on their phone. It will only be selectively enforced or tacked on to who gets cited in an accident. I'm half tempted to drive around today with my hand to my head and see if I get pulled over. I wonder if they could ticket me, if there is no phone in the vehicle at all? drc |

No, I am not a chief of surgery but when one needs to get a hold of me I need to be available...If I am not the GE or Seimans rep probably will be. It's not how important I am...it's how impotant the person trying to reach me is. It's called making a living and if you spend an hour to an hour and a half driving to one Hospital that's just too much time to not be available. Not to mention that would add to the amount of time I would have to be on the phone once I got home...it's hard enough to find time to ride.

I don't know your experience, but 80% of the drivers that cut me off are on the phone. Even after laying on the horn, none of these drivers probably think they were guilty of "reckless operation" much less know what it means. People need things spelled out for them. I agree that people don't get ticketed for seatbelts much anymore, but how many more people now use seatbelts than if the law never required them to wear them? That law saved many lives. Just as this law will prevent many accidents. Ticket or no ticket, people will be less likely to use the phone when driving. Sure people will still eat, change clothes, and knit, while driving. But there will less of those than cell phone users.

Just wait until the distraction is "texting" VS talking. There will be a whole lot more serious accidents.......
ME.... I just talk to myself...that in itself is a big distraction!

I drive a lot(3 hours, 120 miles a day) for work this rule is great, as someone stated 80% of the people that are driving oddly cutting peeps off are on Cellios...its about time, its inconvenient but I think it will improve the road ways...Im willing to put up with it, to be safer.

So, just a little update an officer friend of mine, who is pissed about this law, told me that since he is being forced to enforce it, he is taking it to the full extent he can. He is siting drivers for Use of a cell phone as well as wreckless driving, and wreckless endangerment!!!!!!!

I always did feel distracted while holding the phone, though. It was just uncomfortable and I didn't like it. I like using the earbuds that came with the iPhone. I think I can only have one ear plugged in, but who knows? My FJ has an mp3 in jack and I plug the phone in there and talk while hearing the person through my stereo. It really works great, but I don't recommend trying to plug it all in while driving. Instead of the cell phone law, I'd rather a law outlawing DVD players that I can see through people's back windows, all billboards, roadside neon signs, and any font of any size on a moving car. That s**t is really distracting. Oh yeah, add 30 ft tall blow up gorillas to that list and any roadie wearing more than five colors at once. |
