Default Belgian beer buzz

Whole Foods (at least the one in my neck of the woods) has a rack of fine Belgian beers. It stopped me dead in my tracks today as I was fulfilling wifey's grocery list...tofu, rice milk, eggs, cheese, whoa! - forget the eggs, gotta make room in this hand basket for the 750 of Piraat and a few other choice bottles. And tonight I was going to pull and grease my creaking EBB (thatsh eckshentric boddum brackit for youse shlurrrry folksh too shlurrrrry to know). After 750ml of 10.5% I am one with the velvet couch whilst the bike hangs from the rafters in my studio.

Anyway, rendering video files for a meeting in the morning (ie plenty of time to kill while babysitting the computer) and I came across this site: www.ratebeer.com. WARNING: It will make you thirsty!

Whole Paycheck has the same wall here in Tustin. I don't shop there much anymore.. After a couple of trips of $100.00 on food and another $100.00 on beer.

OK, one of my pet peeves since I am Belgian is that they are Belgian beers, not Belgium beers. Just like we have American beers, not America beers. Conjugation is a beautiful thing.

Ratebeer is a good one. Also try beeradvocate.com. Both have way more info than you ever want to know about beer.

Piraat is dangerous but lovely stuff.

I'm still a bigger fan of BevMO, but Whole Foods does have a nice selection. I don't mind paying more for beer. It's all how much I spend on snacks at Whole Foods. Oh that cheese looks good! Oh, so does that hummus! Oh so does that...you get the picture.

It's amazing how non-essentially that other stuff becomes once you find the fine beer section! Nice find...

I'll second Sam on beeradvocate.com - great resource, and less beer snobbery than ratebeer. Just never tell them you think Tomme Arthur is overrated - they'll brand you a heretic and tear you apart like wolves!

Default Why I Like Whole Foods

I live in Austin, TX - HQ to Whole Foods. Not sure if it's the same in OC, but in Austin, they have taps in the store so you can enjoy beer while you shop.

Don't like what's on tap? No taps at your WF? Ever want to try ALL the different IPAs in the cooler? You can go to the cooler, and pull a bottle out of any six-pack and they charge you one-off. Usually about $1.75 - $2.50 per bottle in my experience.

Be warned: having a few beers while "window shopping" in Whole Foods = everything starts to look good = cha ching!

That would be nice, but I know that in CA they cannot give away alcohol, they must sell it to you. That's why BevMo has $1 to $3 tastings on Fridays. I know there are wineries and breweries that get away with giving free tastes and God bless them for doing it, but I don't think a big store like Whole Foods could get away with it for very long.

I do like stores that will let you buy one bottle out of a six pack.

Piraat with Library Ale House's strip steak sandwich is a wonderful combination. I love that place. I took my wife on our first date there.
