Default Motorcycles and emissions

I was talking to someone at work this past week and he tells me that motorcycles will be required to pass emissions testing starting in 2010. Has anyone heard of this?

Both on road and off road motorcycles have had to pass emissions limits for years. The only exception are those designed for competition only.

There are emissions standards that must be met for street legal (i.e., factory plated) motorcycles. Ditto for off road dirtbikes (e.g., green or red sticker). But AFAIK street legal motorcycles have not had to be peroidically tested for compliance at a "smog check" center. I have been riding dualsport dirtbikes for years and have never been tested. My understanding is that this will change in coming years, but not sure exactly when. No big deal. EFI is now going mainstream and within a year or two, all dualsports will be EFI and easily emissions compliant. Not sure whether or not older bikes will be grandfathered.

I should have been clearer about what I meant when I created the post. I was referring to regular emissions testing. I'm concerned that older bikes won't be "grandfathered", I'm hoping they are.

Yes, I have heard it, and yes it is going to happen, question is...When. Yes older bikes will be grandfathered just like cars were, It will be a standard Two speed Idle test, seeing as to how hard it is to mount a Bike on a Dyno to run a test like the IM 240, ETC.

I'm sure everything will be grandfathered in. They can't sudenly tell everyone that what was legal when they bought it is suddenly "illegal". There would be a riot.

Older dirt bikes are grandfathered with green stickers even though they don't meet today's emission standards.

Attrition takes care of older vehicles.

Just like a '67 Camaro - Chevy can't build them like that anymore but as long as it's still in driving condition, it's good to go. The burden is on the manufacturer to buld cleaner new vehicles.
