I'm headed down to SD area tomorrow with the GF and need ideas as to what to do for the day til we meet up with another friend for dinner in Chula. Any ideas?
I've already looked into Wild Animal/SD Zoo and those are options. Anything else? I'm not too familiar with SD except for some parts of downtown and gone to coronado a few times. Thanks. Is Scripps Aquarium cool at all? I've been to some pretty awesome aquariums and always enjoy them (monterey, long beach, other small randoms along the coast) And no, riding is not an option. Damn... I purchased annual family passes to the Scripps Aquarium several years ago. It's not as large as the Monterey Aquarium, but it's a great place to kill 1-2 hours. The parking is not a problem. We would spend a few hours there and walk around the cliffs down by La Jolla Cove. When I lived down in San Diego while attending SDSU, I spent a lot of time surfing and hanging out down by Sunset Cliffs. If you have time, drive out to the end of Point Loma. It's a great place to view the city and walk around the light house. Check out this link for 25 fun and free things to do in San Diego: http://www.sandiego.org/article/Visitors/795 P.S. It was nice riding with you at Aliso the other day.

Can't forget about Balboa Park! LOT's of things going on there, many museums, gardens, etc. Very fun place to hang out and relax!
In terms of Beaches, Torrey Pines has a grassy area but gets quite crowded. Blacks is awesome (for surfing) and that... if you're into that but it's quite a walk down and back up. If you are into buildings UCSD might kill a couple of hours if you walk around it. Like Pacman said, Seaport Village is kinda cool/quaint. If she's into shopping Mission Valley/Fashion Valley has a large center and mix of stores. You could check out the lighthouse in Point Loma. Oh man I could go on forever, I really miss living there! I'll post more as I remember them. You can't really go wrong with Balboa park though, a lot of things to do and a lot of things going on. |

Balboa Park, Old Town, Gaslamp Qtr.
...and agree that Scripps birch Aquarium is very good (but can't compare to monterey). Check the tide charts and walk the beach nearby tide pools at low tide. Stop on the coast along the way at beaches. Lou's Records in Encinitas. |

Yeah, unfortunately this is not the weekend to go to the aqaurium or La Jolla, stay south of La Jolla, maybe Balboa Park, or the tide pools at Cabrillo National Monument would be my choice, Coronado might be cool also.

Wild Animal Park in San Pasqual area might be an option, too. But as someone else said, to kill the whole day (and have it not be shopping based) do Balboa. If so, I highly recommend eating lunch or dinner at the Prado restaurant right in the heart of Balboa park. Great ambiance, reasonable prices, killer food!!!
For shopping and just wandering around, there's always Downtown (Gaslamp) and the Embarcadero. |

There is mission beach & PB, good place for a visit and walk around, and its near Sea World, but parking is a head ache unless you park at the marina and walk in.
You can also drive to Coronado area, have a look at the famous landmark hotel near the beach, and if you're at North County SD, you can go to Lego Land in Carlsbad. The outlet at Carlsbad is not bad either. You can also visit Cardiff beach, to get some sun and relax. If you want to brave it and have a good amount of patience you can go into La jolla and look at the shops. As everyone mentioned about Torrey Pines Golf Tourney, it will be traffic coming in and out.
