Default Recommendtions for a road Wheel set

What would you all recommend in say the 250$ range? Also what would you recommend for shifters and possible crank set as well.

1750g for $219:

1620g for $299

Very good wheels for the price and excellent customer service. When you call, the owner answers the phone.

Crankset? Depends... Bang for the buck? If you ride a lot, probably Ultegra 9spd., If occasionally, 105 or R700 should do fine. Same for shifters IMO. If you only ride once in a while, then lots of cranks will work just fine (Truvative, Ritchey, etc.). SRAM would be fine, just seems pricey to me. I can usually find better deals on Shiamno stuff.

Thanks man, this is all new to me so I want some decent stuff, but no need for really high end.

for 250, I cannot find other than whats listed for a good wheel.

But, if yuo wanted to step up and go for about 400, I would suggest some Open Pros, on Ultegra hubs Double butted in the front 3x both front and rear, alloy Nipples

Shave some of that down to about 300 if you went with 105 hubs.

Mavic Open pros, they are a 32 hole wheel, nothing fancy, But they are light, damn solid, stiff and extremly dependable. I ride them and I weigh in at 245, I lay into to these and love them.

I have a set of Mavic Aksiums and they have been very good to me. They have the reputation for being workhorses, and I can't think of a better way to describe them. I weight about a buck forty, but I go up and down curbs and do bunny hops on them fairly often. They've hit their share of potholes at speed as well. So far I've only had to lightly true the front wheel once. $200 shipped to your door from probikekit

If you already have wheels that are in the same caterogy, I would just have a set handbuilt in the $500 to $600 range. For that price, you can have a fairly light set of dependable wheels.

That's alright. If you can wait, they go on sale at around $180 from probikekit. The company is in the UK, and it used to be an even better deal before the dollar lost it's value.

Some more options. I'd also rec. the Open Pro and Ultegra setup. Very reliable wheelset.

I don't know the seller but if I was building up a road bike right now I'd jump on this deal:
http://classifieds.roadbikereview.co...oduct=9495&cat=

I know its more than a crankset and shifters but damn you could sell the rest and do pretty well...

Oh yeah, and I second the open pro's ultegra build. I have / had a set of open pro dura ace build I've replaced the rear open pro but the front and the hubs are still going strong.
I think funky aero spoked / proprietary hubs / rims are good for racing but not for sustainable riding.

Man, that Dura Ace is a great deal.

I've got 30,000 (almost) miles on my Ultegra crankset and it's still going strong. Looks like it's got 50K on it but at this point I don't really care what they look like anymore just how they preform and they preform great. I wish my mtb componets stood up as well as my road stuff.
