Default job seekers: a new option

some may know, but i sure didn't, but Saddleback Church has a jobs ministry.

I went for the 1st time last night and was highly impressed with it- they have meetings every monday night from 7-9pm and a mixer every 1st monday of the month. apparently the month mixer is quite a few employers hyping what they can and not a whole lot of actual mixing, or at least that's the impression i got from talking with people.

things they work on:
  • resumes
  • cover letters (found some amazing tidbits here- apparently if anyone ever looks at your resume on monster, the average "look" time is 20 seconds )
  • 30 second "elevator" speech (how to hype/promote yourself in 30 seconds)
  • what to wear
  • mock interviews
  • networking (both through jobs posted/known about, people you meet, connections made, etc.)
and on....

a HUGE thanks to OMR for getting me more information about this.

I suggest that if you're looking, you give it a shot. As it is through the church, religion is involved, but it's definitely a help, which I'm sure most need.

Some good info here. A big part of resumes, cover letters, and business communication in general is stripping down messages to the bare essentials. Knowing your audience, knowing what you want them to feel/do, and knowing how to package your message are all extremely important.

Unlike most classes I've taken, the business communications class I took a couple years ago has actually come in handy numerous times.

funny indeed! the only issue- it's at a CHURCH, so I think drinking might be frowned upon.

the most mind-blowing piece of information I received was concerning cover letters- basically that you take the job description, find 5-6 bullet points in it, and expand upon those as to why you meet/exceed those qualifications- it's a trick to make the reader want to look further into your resume, prove why you're a good fit, and show that there are areas that you definitely don't require training on. .

Yeah, the cover letter basically is a reason to look at (or not look at) your resume. Job seekers don't realize how important it really is. When I'm hiring for my staff, the cover letter gets your foot in the door or not.
