I am currently looking for a job in the restaurant/service industry and have compiled a list of places to apply to (all in the Fullerton area or close to);
Lucilles Bucca De Beppo Cheesecake Factory BJ's Claim Jumper Taps CPK Chomp Melting Pot Yard House Summit House Can anyone add a restaurant to my 'possibles' list? Know where they're hiring? There's so many restaurants in the area and I'm just trying to hit them all (preferably more expensive ones). Thanks. |

I've never had a job without tips so there's no point in stopping now! Seriously if you want to make money before you have to 'grow up' and get a 'real job' then being a server is an AWESOME way to make money. It's good enough that I know plenty of people who've made careers out of it. Do it. |

As for the Cheesecake Factory, suggest in going in prior to submitting your application, A friend of mine submitted an application at Mission Valley in San Diego, she told me that there's something you had memorize and speil the whole thing at an interview or something in that nature. If you pass that hurdle, and succeded in getting in the Cheesecake factory, you can get into any restaurant that you want to get into. Goodluck.

I don't think the Melting Pot has staying power...great location(DT Brea) but that spot has been 5-6 different restraunts in the past 5-6 years..I've been there 3 x's and its dead everytime...
Pane E Vino across the street is a GREAT place to work the owner is a GREAT chef...

If this is your first job or you were not a server at your prior restaurant gig, there is a very good chance that they'll start you off at host. The restaurant will want you to learn the ropes and prove your worth before they move you up to server. Ruby's did not have a host tipping policy, but I believe nicer establishments to be different in that regard. Another thing to keep in mind if you start out at host is employee turnover. If you are at a nice restaurant, it may take you some time (1+ year, easy) to move up the ladder. I thoroughly enjoyed my time at Ruby's. It was a great learning and growth experience, one that I would not have had sitting behind a desk. |

Was a server for three years. Gotta agree . . . pretty good for not being a 'grown up' job. It's a lot of work though. Good luck on your search

If you can sell check out Yardhouse. $10 Apps $20 plates $6 beers $9 Martinis & deserts in the $8 dollar range theres plenty of oppertunity to upsell & the guests are always in the drinking mood. I worked for them for many years in multiple locations & everybody always did very well.
Cool place to work & the service standards are pretty casual They are opening a new Grill Concept in Chino Hills & are hiring for the opening, always good to get in at the start as there is little pecking order & everything is up for grabs shift wise

I work at chili's in Yorba Linda. I have been serving at chili's (aliso viejo and yorba linda) for about a year and a half. It's pretty cool there, but I'm considering applying at other resturants.
The only problem with leaving chili's is that I pretty much right my own schedual and do fairly well there. Plus you can't beat the dress code. I don't know if I could function as well in a dress shirt and tie. Another advantage of staying in my position is I know the menu up and down. That's really nice at least in my opinion. To the OP, I have no suggestions for you since I am new to the area. Good luck in you search though! |

Don't know much about the restaurant industry, but a friend of mine just left her plenty-of-tips-but-crappy-job at vie de france in south coast plaza for the relative slowness of the irvine mimis cafe. She doesn't like the fact that there's less tip money at her new job, but enjoys it because its not a crappy atmosphere. Food for thought I guess.
Working in a bike shop is kinda fun too, pay sucks but the discounts definitely offset that. |
