Depends on which Audi 4.2 he has. The Allroad and current A6(C6) has a chain and the A6(C5) has a belt.

I went Japanese and bought a GX470...love it!
Yes, their engineers are not very good at electrical stuff, I guess.

Have you taken the GX470 offroad?

Not neccesarily a car, but what about even a small truck?
what about a turbo volvo wagon. something like a 245 or a 745. they are dirt cheap, built like tanks, last forever and have great potential for power, especially if you slap on a turbo. oh and if you keep it really clean, you can pull chicks with them. http://www.turbobricks.com/feature.p...tent=spring_08

Jeeze, the only thing Volvo left on that motor is the block. Twenty three pounds of boost can make anything go fast.

I have an LR3 and I did have issues with the suspension sensors within the first 500 miles. No issues since then. I really like the way it handles on and off road. You get to appreciate the vehicle's capabilities once you take it offroad. The LR3 climbs like a mountain goat and can get through pretty rough terrain. Lots of fun... It's my offroad toy when I'm not on moto.
One of my friends has a LR Discovery. I think it's an '03. In late '04, we went on a trip to Moab to go riding. On one of our "off" days, we took the Disco into Arches N.P. on some pretty serious off-road trails. I was quite impressed at how well it did. In fact, one of the reasons my friend got the Disco was because it was "ancient, proven technology that just worked."

Two days after we off-roaded in Arches, the oil pump failed on the Disco without warning and the motor spun a bearing. It had about 9000 miles on it when this happened.

The volvo V50 Turbo is a bad arse car but here in Socal their are not many of them at the dealerships so good luck in finding one you want. If you want to drive it out that day.

The cars I am looking at is the Volvo V50 Station Wagon Good car will last forever. Downside chicks see Volvo and they automatically think I am married with kids and the thing is a tank so it gets like 24 to 26 MPG on the Hwy.

Audi A3, great car with 200HP and nice turbo this car really is fun to drive and has some pep, no turbo lag what so ever. The car has great gas mileage at 29 MPG Hwy. The downside is the car can not hold their value (best to buy used on this one). Oh and I worry about this car 5 to 6 years down the road.

The Subaru Outback XT Limited good dependable car overall I think this is the best car I could get for a station wagon right now vs. price of the other vehicles I mentioned above. The gas mileage is so so but what do you expect with 245HP AWD turbo car. The ground clearance is nice and this car will last forever. The downside chicks see this car and they think oh Subaru he must be married, with kids.

99 4Runner 4WD, 154K miles & still kicking. Body's not looking as sexy as it once did but the motor will go for another 100K-150K miles. Toyota & Honda engines just run & run.

in the near future, I'm giving it to my son & was considering a hybrid. what do you think of the new 08 Toyota Highlander Hybrid? Anyone have any first hand experience?

Best I've ever had:

1. In England: I had a 1992 Mitsubishi Pajero LWB with the diesel engine. That truck ROCKED! Slow, but you really don't need to go that fast across the pond. I only had to replace the fuel rail in the four years I owned it. Other than that, it's in near new condition. Land Rovers suck. You often find them on the side of the road or parked out front with a puddle underneath 'em.

2. When I got Home: 2008 Nissan Titan and it's been awesome so far. I'm really impressed with the interior size and the fuel range. I drove to Santa Barbara from Las Vegas, around the race area, then made it all the way to Barstow before I had to refuel.

3. 1996 Nissan Sentra GXE. 10 years of ownership , 178,000 miles, and I didn't even change a bulb. Regular maintainance, lots of washing and polishing and she was finally retired after a traffic collision put the trunk in the back seat and pushed the rear wheels up near the drivers door. Even to death, everything worked as designed.

4. Honda and Toyota. You're not going to get a longer lasting vehicle.

Trash:

1. BMW. What a bunch of crap. I owned a 1994 540i and a 1998 525 and both required way too much attention. I replaced fuel pumps, self-leveling motors, drive-trains, brake lines, and the list goes on and on.

2. Ford. I dropped my Mustang GT and SHO off at the dealership three times a month to fix the same problem-transmission. Poor quality. Things wore out quickly.
Bad gas miliage too. Worse I've ever had.

-To replace the front license plate frame on Discoveries you pretty much have to disassemble the whole front end of the truck to get to the fasteners.
The Discos were V8s. And the block could trace its roots back to a Buick block from the late 1950s. The heads were newer, FWIW...

Lotsa rust on mine - 5 years in New England left the underbody looking pretty lumpy, which is lame for a "go anywhere" vehicle.

Front license plates? That's what zipties are for!

BUT - I was planning on keeping mine forever, until someone decided to play bumpercars with the cars parked along my street. Never had a major issue with ours, but I'm sure that I wouldn't have that kind of luck if we were to buy a replacement.

YEAH! The BUS! I rode it the other day, because he said we could ride the bus all the way out to a local trail (And it did!) and this guy took a dump in his pants and kept saying, between some fairly wet farts, "Oh.....OOOOOHHHH....yeah.....Tell me a STOOOOORYYY!!!! What's that? What's THAT? A STOOOOOOOORY? TeLlLlllllLLLLLl ME A GOOD ONE!"

I didn't know if I should laugh or cry....or hand the guy some wet naps I had in my back pack.

The trip back had me sitting in between this very sweet lady and the devil. EPIC.

We're going to do it again. It saved gas, dropped us off at a pretty gnarly trail, and let's face it-when are you going to see stuff like that in your car/truck?????

japanese cars: bulletproof powertrrains and drivetrains and run forever. cheesier interiors.

german cars: great when new. horrible after 60k. can't seem to ever get any electrical right. nice interiors

american cars: nice trucks, especially the diesels. cant seem to figure out how to make decent fun cars. crappy interiors. can't decide on standard or metric. drives me nuts when i have to switch tools while working on them. reliability seems to be hit or miss. some run forever, some just spontaneously combust.

british cars: eh.....

italian cars: cant afford them

korean cars: used to suck hard. now seem to have stepped it up.

any other country car: not worth mentioning

ymmv

Scions are a Toyota with a different bodys.I had to make my list kinda short in fear of making the post to long.
