Default Coyote Carnage - graphic photos

WARNING - The pictures below will probably offend cat lovers.

My daughter returned from her first year away at college this past weekend. I took a little time from work and shared a nice backyard breakfast with her on Tuesday morning.

I left for work about 7:15 and as I was pulling out of the track I saw our local "urban" coyote. I usually see him during early morning and late afternoon walks with the wife.

Luckily, I had my cheapo camera in the front seat after yesterday's Fully Loop ride. I followed him up the street for a better picture. He/she showed ABSOLUTELY no fear and was just trotting up the sidewalk into the fields.

I know it's just nature doing what nature does, but I almost never get to see the this kind of scene unless its on NatGeo.

Excuse the lame attemps at croping and enhancing. The last photo looks a little fake - trust me it was real. I'd say at least 5 other cars stopped to watch.

Not even 100 yards from my door

At the top of the street

Cropping in

Dude thats Gnarcore.
Now i know what happened to my Cats when i was like 5 years old.

Oh while on the topic, i used to have goldfish when i was 4-5 and when they'd die i'd get excited to flush them down the toilet.
Well, one time my cat got hit by a car in front of my house, and i asked my dad " Dad can i flush her down the toilet?"

It's amazing how nonchalant he looks... just trotting down the street, breakfast in hand (i mean jaws).
Poor kitty!

P.S. I'm a cat lover and am not offended. This is natural law at work... and natural law is never wrong.

Bastard hound.... too slow to hunt the three billion rabbits so its poaches the cats. In my neighborhood they almost killed my friends Akita....if you think they aren't dangerous...think again.....they will hunt in a pack if they're hungry enough. My friends went out with a bb gun and shot them off the Akita...1200 in vet bills later the poor dog is fine, but terrified outdoors. And the Akita was 95 pounds. There's a fine line to "nature" vs overbreeding scavengers. Ok I'm done being annoyed now.

Yeah, but you can't be too mad at them. Its just the way of nature. Especially when you consider how much urban sprawl has encroached on their natural habitat.

Plus we all know that canines are natural pack animals. Imagine if you walked around your neighborhood and saw a pack of Akitas roaming around? Now that would be just as scary if not scarier.

Yeh....but why not eat the 10 rabbits sitting on the lawn every night??? Why eat the poor cats? I know I know....and I'm not much of a cat LOVER persay....I just have one and worry about her when I let her out to play in the bushes...even during the day! I agree....still irritates me. If Akitas ran in packs we'd be in big trouble...and I'd own an elephant rifle.

Wilie C, probably caught Tom Cat while he was stalking Jerry and had his guard down.

Now I am not a cat person at all. My family has own cats, and the are vicious. I have seen them kill just for pleasure. They will maim a kill and toy with it, then just leave after the poor thing finally dies.

I know....mine fluffs up and stalks me down the hall ....she'll look me dead in the eye like "if I was 5 feet taller woman you'd be dinner for me" . Part of me hates them for it...part of me admires them for it... but she's the house comedian and I'd be pretty sad to see her eaten.

From what I know of biology, cats are such efficient hunters that they would decimate a rodent population if not for the predation by things like Coyotes. If that happened, plants would suffer since rodents help spread plant seeds.

The cat lover in me, however, wishes I had been there with a rifle and a scope...

As a compromise, my kitty stays indoors. Period.

It's tough to see your pet being carried off as a meal, however IMO if you know you live in an area inhabited by wildlife you take that chance if your pets go outside. Since moving up to Morro Bay, we have to contend with these guys among all the other wildlife. I'd never really seen a red-tailed hawk up close until I came home from the store, looked up and saw one perched on our BBQ eying our smallest pug. Since then, we don't let the pugs out in the yard unless we're home.

That looks like one healthy coyote...he obviously has found a neighborhood that doesn't keep all the cats inside...

We adopted a cat recently and the vet said he was an outside cat so leave him out....I warned them we live in a heavy traveled area with the wildlife...he told me that the cat would be happier being outside then being held captive inside....needless to say...we only had the cat for a few days...two nights left out and he disappeared!

The cats kill mice/birds/lizards...the coyotes kill the cats. Howcome nobody is sad about the stuff the cat killed?!

As I'm typing this, our new kitten Mowgli is sitting on my shoulder like a parrot watching me type, and our 110 lb dog Lugnut is laying next to me. I also like coyotes...got to ride next to one for a bit at Fullerton a few weeks ago.

Nature can be graphic, but really, while the coyotes methods aren't quite as "PC," he isn't doing anything much different than humans eating chicken sandwiches or cheeseburgers.

Yeah, it was fully limp and just flapping around while the coyote trotted up the street.

When we moved in 10 years ago, the first thing our neighbors asked was if we had any small pets - not what's your name, do you have any children. Very telling given how close we are to the hills.
