Default Volvo V70 MPG better than an Armada?

Okay, so I have already said the Armada was getting replaced, on my short list was...

Volvo V50
Volvo V70
Audi A3

So today was the big day - I got the okay to start looking.
I test drove a V70 and love it, Price is good and has all the things I need for my little family.

It's a business car (I work for my family) so I had to get the okay from my Bro (boss) -- and he test drove the car with me, It's great and I want it! His only issue is he doesn't think it's going to get any better MPG than the Armada, and the mpg was my reason for a new car.

I don't really know what the MPG is on my Armada - what I do know is I fill the 28 gallon tank about every 5 days and it cost 100 bucks to do so.

Any thoughts?

OMG just a quick scan of something like Edmunds.com would show your boss that the volvo does indeed get good gas mileage better than the armada...and the volvo doesnt have a 28 gallon tank so right there you're ahead of the game.

i show 16mpg city and 24mpg hwy not bad what's your commute like? Freeway or city driving?

Look at the gross vehicle weight of the car, the shape it is (Cdf), the engine capacity (cc) and number of cylinders.....

Lower numbers for all these means your gas goes further. The end.

Or as Foo says - a general rule of thumb would be the larger the gas tank capacity the worse its fuel economy is going to be.

2008 Armada:
12 city/19 hwy (RWD)
12 city/17 hwy (4WD)

2008 V70 3.2L
16 city/24 hwy

I sold Volvo for a while and still drive one/work on them (not to fix them, but to modify them...my 200k mile Volvo is faster than most V8 "sports cars" and still keeps running strong!).

The 3.2L in the V70's is a great engine...I would own a V70 if I had the money.

also i believe there some federal rule that says that a vehicle has to have a range of AT least 300 for a tank...so the size of the gas tank will reflect how thirsty the motor is.

if you get the V50 T5 you get this
Quote:
The turbocharged 2.5-liter five-cylinder of the T5 model has been upgraded by nine horsepower for 2008, bringing its tally up to a healthy 227. This hardly makes the V50 a rocket, but we'll always welcome more power -- especially when it comes with an engine that gets 30 mpg on the highway. The turbocharged 2.5-liter five-cylinder of the T5 model has been upgraded by nine horsepower for 2008, bringing its tally up to a healthy 227. i'm glad the Adams are looking at wagons there are so many good ones to choose from. Have you looked at the SAAB 9-3 sportcombi's? VERY WELL equipped that's less than the Volvo's!! plus you're getting a lot of GMAC backing in terms of "money on the hood"

I own a 2006 V70 with base 2.4 liter 5 cylinder and I average around 24-26 MPG, mixed on the street and freeway, but I'm sure if you're looking at one with a bigger engine or a turbo you'll get fewer MPG. I've had for more than a year with no problems and dig it.

Have you seen the new Rogue?

My GF just got one, and she loves it. 27 mpg highway with AWD. Plenty of room, good sound system, blue tooth, roof racks, keyless, for under 24k (starts at 19).

The Volvos for the turbos station wagon got the worse gas mileage compared to the Audi A3 2.0 and the Subaru Outback Limited.

that's because volvo's are built like tanks and so yah the poor turbo motor has to work a little harder

'08 V70 is N/A though...they took the 3.2L from the S80/XC90.

It's next on my list! Tomorrow morning!I'm worried about room though.

I thought the V50 was the car until I sat in the V70 and everything changed

Hopefully the A3 has something to offer the V70 doesn't

The Volvo 5cyl turbo motor has a serious thirst on it.
If the car weighs under 1.5tons you should be happy with 150-200bhp. More bhp usually costs you more mpg.

sorry to break it to you but interior size is not any better than the V50

and the real crapy thing is the euro vs USD sucks right now they are not making much money on these cars so you cant really NEGOTIATE like you can w/ other cars. that's why a number of these german car companies are looking to build factories over here to take advantage of their buying power

Our 2.5 S60R averages 19-21mpg. I might get up to 25mpg on long highway cruises, but average for a 15 mile commute is usaully 20. At least the 3.2 doesn't require premium fuel.

Not bad at all for 300hp and AWD.
