www.fueleconomy.gov - a good site that has it's numbers based on real peoples' results. Just sift through it and you should find what you need to know. I vote Volvo, VW's have a pretty horrible rep reliability wise. Volvo isn't a lot better I don't think. Good luck with the search.
*Consumer Reports is always a good source for reliability, customer satisfaction, depreciation, etc. |

Another thing to factor into the equation is how does the cost of buying a new car (down payment, depreciation, longer loan length) - I love it these days, people who drive 50 miles a day saying "I'm gonna sell X car and buy Y car so I can get better mileage", then they go drop $4k on a down payment and add 3-5 extra years of car payments on to their financial plan.
Add up what higher gas prices really cost you and figure out your return on investment if you get a new car that gets better mileage. The numbers get even wackier if you buy a hybrid - The ROI on a Hybrid for me, as compared to a similarly equipped car with a traditional drivetrain, is about 7 years, just to break even. Warranty on a Prius or Camry battery pack is 10 years, so then after 3 more years, should you lose a battery, your ROI goes to shit when you have to replace the battery.

Hey Tracy good luck in finding a V50 right now their are not many of them at the Volvo dealership. For you maybe you should look at the Subaru Outback limited real nice car. Really test drive one, I did last weekend and wow that car has all kinds of bell and whistles. The Audi A3 to me I will buy brand used the Audi don't hold their value very well and I can get a service/loaner A3 with like 10,000 miles for pretty cheap compared to a brand new one.

if the V50 is small for Traci and the Adams Family (couldnt resist) the A3 would be down right stiffling.

German autos always cost more to maintain just casue of the name but if you get a car every couple years yer set. I.m stubborn I keep cars till they are absolutley dead. I would go for the volvo safest cars on the road.

Just FYI for car shoppers...you can pretty much buy ANY car at invoice if you go in and ask for it. Most car shoppers aren't aware of this. No dealership is in a position to turn down offers right now, and they usually pay less than what the "invoice" says anyhow.

At invoice, most dealers are still making somewhere between 3 and 5% on just the vehicle (it's called holdback, mention it to a dealer sometime and watch them get VERY defensive in a hurry), then factory to dealer incentives, then points on the back end of financing if you finance through the dealer, money on the fake paint armor, underbody coating, window etching, etc... that they sell you. The only thing not negotiable when purchasing a car is the regional advertising fees. Those are real fees that the dealer pays on every car and will go on top of the price unless you've negotiated it into the purchase price ahead of time.

I don't think diesel is the way to go. Diesels are about 25% more efficient than their gas counterparts, but when the fuel itself costs roughly 25% more to begin with ($5/gal vs. $4/gal as I type this) there's no financial benefit. It's actually worse than that because diesel models cost more to buy in the first place (they require much more expensive exhaust catalysts than gasoline cars). Quote:

But they aren't all that great on gas, unless you go for a non-turbo model, and those are sloooowww....
