Here is mine, it is not at all what I wanted from mid back down. So I say most important make sure you and the artist are 100% on the same page, or you will be stuck with figuring out how to fix what you did not want.

You can see his work on his web site

And here a couple samples

I'd like to see these a few years after they were done...see how the detail held/holds up....they almost look photoshopped

That's the kind of detail and color I'm looking for.

Ken, Just recently Neil went through this same process, listen to your peers who have spent some time under the needle. Plenty of good artists in SoCal..Each with their own eye, Take your time, look at their work and talk to them about what your thinking, Some are better than others in specific types of art..
This will be with you for-ever so don't jump into anything
Yes, I won't be rushing into anything. If I have to sit through some pain and it's going to be on me forever, I only want to have to do it once.

Cost me 50 bucks, and I got it because I thought it was cool, bad mistake.
left shoulder

A year after I got it, I went back and bitched at the shop owner, he agreed it was poor work, and told me he had already fired the guy who did the shotty work, Not much you can do about a 3d tattoo, so he offered my next tattoo for cost of supplies needed. So I picked soemthing that again, was cool at the time, much better quality, but still I regret getting
Middle back....<Forgive my hairy back please>

Soa couple years go by, and I came up with something I really wanted, had at least a dozen different artists draw up what I was telling them, took me about a year to decide on who I wanted, I needed to be picky at this time, I didnt want to end up with something I really didnt want again, and I ended up with this custom drawn little goodie!!!

Right Calf, was also the most costly. but well worth it, this is Jason's work from empire BTW

Now, this summer I will finish the right calf, Will be going from my sock line, to the back of my knee. A Hill top top will be added, with a little fisheye twist, along with two more smaller crosses one on each side, above all of the cross's will be some cloudwork, maybe some lightning, basic scenery filler to give the idea of what was happening with the three cross's all together, and underneath there will be some room left open for some scripture that I have yet to pick.

The back however, because the tatoo's came out in 3d, and have "Blended" a bit I will nto be able to cover, so Jason has been drawing now for five years an entire back peice for me that will use those two, and represent EPH6 11-17 the armor of GOD. So far what we knoe for sure, is the big dragon will be incorporated into the sheild of faith, and the sword will be striking down the small dragon. Everything else we will be adding fresh artwork for. Once the leg is finished we will begin on the reworking of the back, which will go from my waistline to my shoulders!!! I will get the leg done before summer is over, and estimate is about five to six years total for the back to be complete.
Thanks for sharing the pics. The difference in detail is night and day from the first to last one. I think it's the one thing that scares me the most, getting a crappy artist.

Dude where did you get those tatts, in prison?

Brett, that picture of you in your room while you are taking a picture of yourself looks sexy

OK tatts hurt anybody tells you that they doon't his full of kaka. The shading to me was the worse because its a bunch of tiny needles digging tino your skin. Hey the way I look at it once the work starts their is no turning back. If your going to get a sleeve the inside of your arm will hurt like hell.

If your looking for a good shop check out English Ink in Costa Mesa off of Newport Blvd, tell him Adam sent ya. The guy is very busy and I have to make appointments with him at least a month in advance. Another idea for you is their is a tattoo show coming up real soon in Long Beach at the Queen Mary called Ink and Iron and they have a lot of great artists their. I would take a look at their portfolio take a card and maybe give them a call later. Whatever you do don't get a tatt at the show yes it will be a bit cheaper but they rush you like cattle.

Be warned once you get your first tatt you want more they are addicting.

I want to get a portrait of my 3yr old daughter on my right arm/shoulder... my one friend suggests Kat-VonD or the one girl that works with her that is good with faces/portraits.

I have no idea how much it would cost me and I don't like pain.. so, hence no tattoo.. haha

Don't go to Kat Von D yes she is a great artist but not for the money she charges. Their are so mnay other artists out their that can do a great job if not better than her and a hell of a lot cheaper. Check out English Ink. He did my portrait and I get so many compliments off of it.

And she flakes on a number of her appointments. She started a portrait on a friend of mine two years ago and he's still trying to get her to finish it.

Here are some things I always keep in mind when considering a tattoo:

1) Wait at least 6 months between deciding on what you want and actually getting it.

2) Tattoos are made to be permanent (I have friends who get tattoos knowing they'll remove it years down the line ) so be careful what you decide on.

3) Money shouldn't be an issue. Pay the "extra" to go to someone who knows what they're doing and to do something really nice.

4) Don't be afraid of hurting the artist's feelings if you do not like their sketch or their interpretation of what you want. It's your body, it's your money, it's your dignity!

5) Go to a reputable tattoo shop/artist.

6) Don't get anyone's name tattooed on you unless it's someone who's passed away or your kids. Getting your significant other's name/initials seems to start the countdown of doom..

I try to follow these guidelines and so far, it's worked well for me!
