I've noticed a lot of you guys here are either from OC or SD, so you can probably give me some advise on this...my sister is coming to visit in July and she's dying to go to the SD zoo and Sea World...I'm planning to drive to the Zoo (from LA) a Sat morning and then spend the night somewhere to go on Sun to Sea World. The closer to Sea World the better but I would also like something nice and not that expensive (around $100-$150?)...I know, I want it all!
![]() What do you guys recommend in terms of locations? I've looked in all the hotel search websites but am unsure where to look for... Thanks! ![]() |

Sign up for Travelzoo email. My girl and I have stayed in some of the boutique hotels for at the minimum half price. Sometimes less. I'm talking $150 for a $400-500 room. It might be a bit hit and miss as the deals are kind of random but we have been lucky. Downtown is only 10 minutes away maximum.

Hotel circle.. but to tell you the truth i've stayed in almost all of the hotels there and they all kinda suck.
I used to visit my first exwife there and we always rented a hotel room and motel 6 beds suck, the inn at the west end (north side of freeway) is kinda dumpy but used to be the cheapest.. the one across from that is probalby the best in the area (north side).... and then the expensive one down by convention center i've not stayed in.south side of hotel circle i've stayed in 3 of the hotels and they were ok. The one at the east end on (south side of freeway) has decent rooms and would be a good second choice.

You could scope out somewhere near the beach in "Ocean Beach". It's really close and its kind of a fun party beach atmosphere, if you're into that. There probably won't be tons of hotels, but those that are there will probably be quite affordable. And it won't feel like a boring strip mall hotel.

the Bahia and Catamaran are the 2 nice places down the street. But the price is high. I would say Courtyard Marriot in downtown is good on price. Also Ramada, but is is real old and the rooms suck. Hotel circle stinks and a cab to old town will cost more. Their is a best western or travel lodge on Mission bay Drive on Mission/Pacific beach you could walk to PB Bar and grill. That is the best place to go in the PB/MB area. Down town is fun and up scale, if you want a chill laid back area Pacific Beach is the spot. a cab ride from PB to Downtown will run 25. So trake that in to account where ever you stay. Do not Drink and Drive in SD all cops after 8pm are on DUI patrol.

Actually, Hillcrest has some of the best restaurants in the city...Khyber Pass is amazing, for one.
It's not like a gay person is going to come up to you on the street and molest you. Geez guys...lay off (and no, I'm not gay but I have friends who are and I have respect for others). |

I like the Lamplighter, some of the best bar fights happen outside...nothing says SD like a good bar fight out side of a karaoke bar!!!!!hahaha
edit: to be helpful I think Downtown is pretty friggn fun to stay at(bars, restaurants, clubs), and the Horton plaza hotel is suppose to be haunted, although I stayed there and nothing happened...if you do stay there go to the Field and get a Boxty, and a Botingtons(or Fat Tire) and you're golden
