Unfortunately this is not surprising to me and is surely bound to get worse. Notice how the brief also mentions the gap between the richest and poorest SD residents is comparable to the national average - meaning things are the same everywhere - the rich are getting richer and the poor are getting poorer. Our government is doing everything possible to ensure it stays this way - all in the name of capitalism and "free enterprise". Yet amazingly many of these poor people continue to perpetuate the cycle by not voting or voting on "values" instead of candidates who are commited to changing the cycle.
Sorry to sound so negative but this is the times we live in. Anyone who's been to the grocery store lately you will have noticed that the price of EVERYTHING has shot way up, which means even more trouble for people hovering around or below the poverity line. I could go on and on here but I'd start to sound like one of those crazy old people I used to cringe at when they started talking about "hell in a handbasket". ![]() All we can do is get involved, vote with your brain, and burn off all the stress and anguish bombing down some nice singletrack. Too bad that last part isn't an option for many living on meager earnings with no time for fun. |

I view this as just the way it is. (mind you I am very average in all of those numbers earning just around $50,000 a year).
What would someone who views this as a horrible social injustice propose we do to fix it??? I'm all for capitolism. I grew up in rural Arkansas and when I was growing up my famly was below the poverty level. But I stayed away from drugs (though the options were there) finished high school went on to college and now I'm earning an average amount for the county. In a few years I will be above average. But that doesn't take into acount the college loans I will be paying off for the next 10 years. I think that yes there are people who earn alot of money and they should give some back. But that should be their decision. Some day I'd like to be making over $100,000 a year. When I am, I'll know that I worked my a$$ off to get there. But yeah, back to the earlier question. What would someone who views this as a horrible social injustice propose we do to fix it??? |

One should not look to the government to solve one's problems. Each person needs to take ownership of their own life.
I've had much more opportunities than some others. My parents worked really hard to create them for me. Other people are going to have it harder than me. Complaining to the government does not change any of this.

Can someone name me a government program that actually works cost-effectively?
![]() Big(ger) government is not the answer. IMHO.
