If you're looking to just test the waters, I'd recommend a live CD, or something similar like some folks have previously mentioned. Take a look at knoppix and ubuntu. Both of these distros will let you go back to windows if you find out linux isn't your cup of tea.

Have used many distros over the years.....running Linuxmint on my ibm t60 and it works great! I'd download and burn a few live cd's and see how they work on your particular hardware. Go to
http://distrowatch.com/ and try out a few....I personally have not been overly enamored with ubuntu and its variants. PClinux is really good for having multimedia stuff already running without a lot of additional configuration as well as simply mepis. The great thing about linux is "choice" there are a lot available! good luck, Allen |

Many moons ago I also converted from Windows to Fedora. Ran that for a little over a year and then discovered Macs. Been part of the Apple faithful ever since
![]() Ubuntu should take care of most of your needs. What kind of media editing do you do? Video? Audio?

Fedora 8
It comes with Open Office and is pretty nice. I installed it for the guys at my LBS a few weeks ago. I use Mac, Windoz and various forms of Linux and I found the Fedora core to be nice. Not the easiest or simplest but quite complete. Before loading Fedora the guys ran DSL live linux off the CD with great success.

I would stay away from Lunix. Using it could cause you to lean so far to the left, that you may become a socialist. Stay with a well respected and American supported Operating System like Windows Vista™. Besides, do you want to end up looking like a linux hippie?

stallman took it a little too far (as he does with free software imo), but there's an unwritten rule that linux geeks must grow a beard. linus is the only exception really.
