Did you use the same speed in all three photos? If you also look at the background, the G9 has much better background focus as well as foreground focus.

Edit: I looked back in the thread, and I can see you shot the G9 slower than the...damn...already forgot (XT?). That alone is a huge difference, so it's hard to compare.

By the way, anyone interested in a Canon EOS 1-N with a winder? I don't have much need for a film body anymore.

Maven, the shots you've posted demonstrate that you can capture excellent images with anything in your hands. -- ditto that

MTBMaven,

I posted up on your bino q's yesterday. These photo guru's have me beat but I do agree on using a good quality compact vs. a DSLR.

When the in-laws hit Africa, they used a four year old Olympus with a whopping 4MP. Their average animal shot was about 30-50 yards. Their photos came out great (although they do not intend to print and 20" pictures). They did miss some far-off animal photos due to the camera restrictions, but the next day they got their close-up.

Hopefully, your trip will give you the same close shot opportunities.

I recently spent 10 days in the South Carribean and left all my DSLR's and expensive lenses at home. In hindsight, I am really glad I made the decision to do so. It would have taken a lot of the fun out of the trip having make the outings more about the camera than the trip itself and I felt the camera I brought (Canon SX100) performed very well in most circumstances.

Just something to consider...

Have fun on your trip.
+1 for JeffJ. I'm taking a trip at the end of the year and thought about the D40 kit since it was budget friendly until I thought about the cost of lenses and what a PITA it is to carry that stuff around. Also, traveling in other countries makes you a prime target for theft carrying equipment like that. Like everyone else, the G9 can offer great features and photos close to an SLR at a lower price point and lower PITA points when traveling with it.
