My dream car as a kid growing up was to own a Volvo C304 6 wheel drive... a scaled down version of those in the vid. Still have the '78 Volvo catalog stashed at my parent's place. Now you can get 'em for a few thou used in California. Similar is the old MB Unimog

Going back to the original clip - 5:20. The lone clapper who appreciated them taking out the tree and/or getting said tree stuck under the...thing. Classic.

I always wanted the C304, but this is what I ended up with.... it is looking a little more beaten up these days, but the 1980 straight six diesel is all original. Seats 12, perfect surf trip and camping vehicle, (or at least it was when diesel was $2 a gallon). This pic from 2004:

You got that thing here or back in Australia? Convert it to biodeisel. Mr. Wheelie can supply the fuel. Sweet looking rig!

I remember something similar to that Volvo when I was in Iceland. I remember there were buttons to change the transmission to 4x4, 2x4 front only, and 2x4 rear only. Got a photo of it but it's a slide in my dad's slide collection from the trip. I think Majors Surplus in LA has one in the parking lot.

Those trucks were pretty cool, but I couldn't help chuckling at how easy they were slipping and getting "stuck". Many of my friend's Jeeps would have cleared those obstacles with less effort.

But then, being in a 40-foot long rig does give a new meaning to "long wheelbase." lol!

funny, back in my 4x4 days i used to 'wheel with a few jeepers. i used to laugh at them when they had trouble climbing or descending stuff that my 1984 Toyota would just cruise over. jeeps suck compared to a built up classic Toy! (not the crap that toyota sells now)

Those 8x8's are awesome!

I have had a few Unimog's come out with my Hummer crew and I and they are awesome.

A buddy of mine helped build a custom Unimog for Redbull that they travel around with.

To be honest, I regret buying my XJ. The truck I miss the most is my 89 Mitsubishi Montero (puts the Toys to shame with a factory 8" front and 9" rear ring gear and 4.62's)...myself and a buddy in a 4-Runner used to end up leading Range Rover and Jeep runs.

My experience was the opposite: we 4x4'd our stocker MJ around Big Bear's trails and I'd be asked over and over again to help guys in bitchen Toyotas with 31's on them to get out/unstuck. Flexy axles and anemic motors were my general impression, even though they looked way way cooler than our scratched up, Comanche. Well, not counting the fact that we were generally able to keep rolling, which is generally pretty cool.

Now, a sweet FJ with ARB and some motor? Amen, brother.

The last few seasons in Big Bear, with the ever-gnarlier trails, we've mostly seen rock-crawlers, Pingaurs and Unimogs... some of which are a lot like the Euro-monsters in that video above. Gnarly toys, that's for sure.

Pinzgauers and Unimogs are between 10 and 20k.

the 22R wasn't the ballsiest engine on the planet, but when i talk about a well built classic toyota, i meant 33" tires, a 125hp 22R, Marlin Crawler double reduction, lockers front and rear...

about the only place that truck didn't do well was in deep sand or mud. for that stuff you need HP. i built the 22R in my truck and it was decent with a big carb, cam, header and exhaust... but it didn't have the power of bigger motors.

flexy axles?? the toyota 8.5" axles were pretty darn stout. they weren't indestructable, i know because i blew up a 3rd member on the rear of my truck once, but they weren't crap like the Dana 25 that came stock on the front of all the jeep products.

i hope when you talk about FJ, you are talking about classic FJ... not the crap that they are making now!

i wheeled with a guy back in the day with a sick FJ. had a 500 ci cadillac engine. he had endless power, but it was too heavy. i used to easily crawl up stuff that left him wheel standing and balancing on his spare tire rack.

Spent many years driving wheeled log skidders. These skidders can get stuck but it is pretty hard.

My high-school friend and logging partner lost all his fingers on one hand when his skidder starting going over and he grapped the roll cage. His hand got caught between the roll cage a tree.

Jeeps typically have a D30 front, but many of the older models have D44 front and rear. It's next to impossible to break a D44 unless you drive like a putz or you want to run extreme stuff with 35's or better.

It really is mostly driver. The trails stay the same...the only variance I see on the same old trails is the truck and the driver.

I can do 100% of the Big Bear trails in my open/D30 and open/D35 Jeep (Holcomb, John Bull, Gold Mtn, Deep Creek). Haven't gotten stuck or broken...yet. I'm on 33's with stock (3.55) gears. Most people will tell you that you "need" lockers or better axles. I have a 30-spline 8.25 in the garage with a locker, Yukon shafts, 4.56's and disc brakes. Hoping to put it on soon, planning on a Moab trip in October!

The one thing I DO like about the XJ Cherokee is that it's light. My Volvo sedan weighs more than my SUV. It also has a fantastic engine (190hp/220tq) which gives it the same power to weight ratio of a VTEC Honda Prelude.

The Montero was certainly built tougher, but it was considerably heavier and it's 3.0 V6 didn't have the grunt of the Jeep 4.0. It never felt "underpowered" on obstacles, but the Jeep can actually keep up with traffic and merge on to the freeway whereas the Montero felt a little sluggish on the street.
