Got any food?

Can someone please tell me why organic always has to be so ridiculously expensive??
Aren't lady bugs cheaper than pesticides and the scary guys in white spraying everything? It's almost berry season and I love berrys. Fresh blueberries, raspberries and blackberries are my favorites. I swing into "Whole Foods" which I rarely do because they are sick expensive and a 4.4 oz. (the tiny plastic containers)((shouldn't they be in recycled cardboard containers anyway??)) are $8.99 for one. One itsy bitsy blueberry container..organic,is $8.99! I could have put the amount of berries in there into my mouth all at once with no problem! As you guys say...WTF??? "Conventionally grown" was $4.99. Maybe it's on the early side of berry season but come on!! I had some kick ass berries from the Santa Monica Co-op the other day, organic, and they were delicious and reasonable..well, sort of. Should I just go to farmers markets and stock up? I had berries from the regular supermarket the other day and tossed them. They were from Chile and so bland. I wish I lived in a place where I could pick them as I rode.

I shop organic as much as possible and berries are a taple of my diet.
I figure that since I don't eat meat that I can blow that part of the budget on berries. I'm not particularly sensitive to the price... it goes up/down by about $2 depending upon the phase of the moon (or something like that) but even I refused to pay $9 for the blueberries. Dunno what it is about blueberries but they must be really tough to grow organically as they are soooo much more expensive than the conventional ones. The raspberries and blackberries don't seem to be so much more. Of course, the cheap blueberries are probably coming form S. America and are conventionally grown so you don't really know what you are getting. BTW, Berries are one of the most "pesticided" fruits out there and since the skins are so thin it is one of the fruits which make most sense to buy organically.

I just buy whatever is on sale...I think there is a book called "Everyone $hits." That's how I think of food...since we all do it and that's what happens to food, I don't really care about brand, organic/non-organic or anything else for that matter. But one thing I will not compromise is Ketchup, I'll buy Heinz at any price!

My aunt grows them in her yard and would not mind if you helped yourself but she lives in Vancouver Washington.
One time visiting I went out to pick berries for dessert and I picked plenty but none made it in the house.mmmm....mmmmm...good |

Thornless Bosenberries.........
We get enough in one season to freeze 3-4 gallon zip-locks, then use then as "Berrycubes" for smoothies! Nothing (well, not much) better than homegrown! ![]() |

Our household is knee deep in this subject because Bruce is getting his master's degree in crop science. We're also living in an area where the predominate industry is agriculture. We're very lucky to have a farmer's market almost everyday to buy all our produce.
The 'organic' farmer's don't use most pesticides or chemicals to stimulate growth on their produce. It's a little more labor intensive to produce these crops. Cost wise, it's really not that much more than farmers who use the chemicals. In getting to know some of the local farmers we've learned that just being able to use the term organic allows for a much higher price in the market. I must admit though, the locally grown produce tastes so much better than most of the store bought. Quote:

One of the reasons I ride home from runs at Santiago Oaks is a wall of blackberries (?) as you come through the river trail in Maybury Ranch. Awesome! They just started coming into season!

From what I understand, organics are no more nutritious than standard fruits and vegetables. The yield on an organically grown plot is much less than a traditional one. Yes, you have to deal with pesticides, but if you don't you have to wash your fruits and vegetables with either? Besides I like the "see my own reflection" effect I get on my apples

Thanks all. I really appreciate some of the informative and enlightening responses I got.
Someday I will pick my own somewhere on a trail. Meanwhile I'll try to hit farmers markets and also hope a fresh and Easy opens around here. Then there is always Marie Callenders berry pie which will hopefully be out in a month or so. Man they are so good!
