About the time the song first came out (early 70s) I was surfing 16th street in Newport. Overhead, hollow barrels, offshore wind. There was a fire in the hills to the south, maybe El Moro, or the north end of Laguna. The smoke was on the water and I had that song going through my head. I think Surfer Magazine had a shot of that day too. Smoke on the Water aways been one of my favorites. Cracks me up to see that clip. Enough of flashbaacks, back to work.

Deep Purple is classic Brit hard rock!
Highway Star, Smoke on the Water, Burn, etc. bring back happy memories of being a teenager in the '70s.

Richie Blackmore and Deep Purple kicked some serious rock-ass! I even loved Richie's post Deep Purple band (Rainbow) with Dio. IMO, Blackmore is in the top ten of best rock guitarists of all time.

"Smoke on the water", "Child in Time", "Space Truckin" and "Highway Star" are all great songs but they have so much more not so popular songs with amazing guitar riffs. "Made in Japan" is arguably one of the best rock live albums ever released.

BTW, that Japanese rendition of smoke on the water is awesome!

Original DP version...

Definitely my favorite band growing up. Paice and Lord also kicked some serious arse. I always felt SOTW was as much a curse as a blessing to them as musicians. They have so many songs that are better IMHO, just not as popular, yet the first song people think of when mentioning Deep Purple is SOTW.

I saw Blackmore once in Rainbow. He played the first three chords of SOTW and the place went nuts... then went into yet another forgettable Rainbow tune. Did the whole show with nary another mention or tribute to DP.

I've seen other major artists that have had their new bands play a few tunes from a new band mates earlier work, would it have killed him to slip in a DP number or two?

Oh well. Long live the Gillan, Glover, Lord, Paice & Blackmore version of Deep Purple

Interesting rendition of Smoke on the Water. Listened to a lot of Deep Purple as I was growing up. "Machine Head" is still one of my all time favorite albums!!!!!
