Holy sh&% someone was right when they said this was a can of worms! My goodness all I was doing was saying that I was up late writing a paper and it wasn't much fun! I'm sure those of you who work have been at work and have said to yourself "this sucks". That one statement didn't mean I was going to not go to college (already in it) or drop out or that you would quit your job because it wasn't any fun at that moment. I'm not exactly sobbing my eyes out or complaining about how hard my life is.

When I said "school is for fools" that is from Mr. Deeds, the movie. It's funny, watch it. I did not mean that school is actually for fools (I'd be a hipocrite at this point). If anything I am one of the biggest advocates for higher education. Sometimes I feel like a parent when talking to my friends who may have lost drive for school because I tend to promote the great things education can bring people on many different levels.

I will finish finals this week and next and I will graduate with a degree (Business) and strongly believe that college is good for almost everyone. Yes it opens doors, blah blah, I had this practically hummed into my ears while sleeping when I was a [younger] kid. My parents told me enough that I thought that college was somthing that you just did or happened when you got old enough like puberty or something. Now that I'm here now I understand their motives and appreciate every opportunity they have given me to be where I am now. At the same time I know that school is not for everyone and isn't needed to be make lots of money. I don't look down upon people who don't have the same education as I do because what they could take just as much if not more brains to do than what I do. Hell I live with a mechanic and I envy his knowledge of seemingly everything that I don't know.

I also realize that my life right now is probably as good as it may get. Obviously this isn't always true but it's possible; little responsibility, meet lots of new people, new experiences, learn new things, etc. I'll just take what I've got and make the best of my life.

Different strokes for different folks. Not one thing makes everyone happy, we're all individuals.

Yes I do admit the tan is pretty gnarly, and this year I might be in decent enough shape to take the shirt off and not be laughed at by everyone within a mile of the pool.

Ok I have read a lot of these post. So to addI went to a trade school in Renton for auto mech. After That I went to any classes I could find that I payed for out of my own pocket, many seminars, went and got my A.S.E certs which I payed for. Most of the seminars/classes I went to were after working 8hr days.Spent around 40,000 on tools for work.I even went to tech school in Huston when I worked for Mercedes.I was in school for the super bowl, talk about sacrifice. All in all,I can now go to any shop and easily get a job. With all that I now only have to work 3 days a week most of the time.So did educating myself pay off, for sure!

I got sooooo lucky...I came to CA with 3 years of experience and in Jan 2007, the governator signed a law into the books that grandfathered me (and others like me) out of the BITSA program. I definitely didn't need to be sitting around learning stuff I already knew.

This is a great debate...I wanted to comment earlier but was swamped at work. This month I will be graduating college after six and a half years. The decision for school created mixed feelings in me.

I'm Dyslexic, Learning Disabled, and ADD; so school has always been very difficult. My high school advisor told me "I was not college material" and I was wasting my time applying. So after that it was time to prove him wrong. Eight majors later I'm going to finish.

Extended Education is one of those things that can go either way. I have no doubt in my mind it made me a more rounded, intelligent person (the wife might disagree). Some people are successful without. Still yet there are some that bust their rumps with school to become teachers (like my wife) and get paid less than people who have no degree. But others can get paid millions for catching a ball?

Anyway, I have some GREAT hazy memories of college...make yours as clear as you can.

Andy

Heh, heh, heh...

Then you're gonna be in for a pleasant surprise in a few years when you realize that it just keeps getting better and better.

Rob

P.S.
You're right. Both school and work suck. Even the best job in the world eventually becomes mundane. But it's better than starving. But not as good as riding--and it's now time to ride. Adios.

If you want to do anything meaningful you have to go to graduate or professional school and that's another 2-7 years and a few hundred K more in loans. What a crock.
I had a totally different experience. College and post graduate school was the best thing I ever did. I absolutely love what I do, I make good money, and it was the best decision of my life.

I almost bailed out of school freshman year, I'm sure glad I didn't. I also took time between college and grad school as well. I think working full time through college and before grad school helped since it became clear what I wanted & what I needed to get there.

huh, i was just gonna chime in to say that ive got a large research paper due on monday, and I havn't even started it. Instead, I am procrastinating on STR, thinking about my ride tommorow, and getting ready for bed. Personally, I'm a HUGE fan of school. I just hate homework. I'll work my ass off in class, but at home, I don't want to think about school. Anyway, school is good, and drugs are baaaad. mmk?
