Officials: Teen smoking pot ignites brush fire

More than 7 acres charred in Aliso Viejo, threatening homes, after blaze that one of 3 boys started burns out of control.

ALISO VIEJO – A teenage boy smoking pot with two others caused a fire that burned more than 7 acres over the weekend, threatening homes and apartments near the blaze, fire authorities said Tuesday.
It took about 45 firefighters an hour to suppress the flames after the fire was reported Saturday night on an embankment at Glenwood Drive and Moulton Parkway. Authorities said the parents of the three teenagers have been notified that they may be billed for the cost of fighting the fire, said Capt. Mike Blawn of the Orange County Fire Authority.
Fire officials learned of the three teenagers when one of them confessed to starting the fire, Blawn said. The two other boys confirmed the story.
Officials said that the three 16-year-old boys were smoking marijuana on the embankment when one of them lighted a branch of a tree with a lighter. The fire quickly got out of the boys' control and the three boys ran, Blawn said.
No one was injured in the fire and no structures were damaged.
The three boys are also being required to enroll in Fire FRIENDS, a national program to educate minors to the dangers of intentionally setting fires, Blawn said.
An estimated cost of the damage has not yet been established, Blawn said.
The identity of the three boys has not been released because they are minors.

Another reason it should be legal. Smoke on your back porch or at a Pot Bar where it's safe. Just saying. Also, side note: I don't smoke pot, maybe twice in highschool. I'm not a hippie, just following logic.

I too am not a fan of pot at all but I think there should be some degree of legality with it. I think people can make their own decisions with regards to their health so long as the smoke is not around me I don't care what someone does to themselves-I also don't like the smell of pachouli.

Just the idea of a social networking aspect on the OC Register page makes my head spin. It's the new Myspace.

P.S. "Catch Heat" on a fire thread. That's Punny.

Was one of them the author of the article too?

Might be ok...

verb ( past and past part. lit |lit|or lighted ) [ trans. ]
1 provide with light or lighting; illuminate : the room was lighted by a number of small lamps | lightning suddenly lit up the house.
• switch on (an electric light) : only one of the table lamps was lit.
• [ intrans. ] ( light up) become illuminated : the sign to fasten seat belts lit up.

Thanks for the info. Craig and I saw a bunch of burned trees off Moulton and wondered what had happened, glad no one was hurt.

I've actually thought about that before, but not because of stupidity.
