Today is Gas Strike Day.!!!
Try not to fill up on any gas at all for the whole day. Let all your friends know. Take your cell phone and text it to all your contacts. Go to work and tell all your coworkers. Call all your family members and tell them as well. GAS STRIKE GAS STRIKE........(and maybe if enough people do it they will start lowering prices) |

Why? This has never worked. People who don't buy gas today buy it tomorrow.

If we all carpooled once or twice a week. Or even better, rode a bicycle once or twice a week that would make a dent.

As mentiond, one day won't make a difference ... how about getting the entire nation to commute by bicycle for a year straight? That will make a serious impact on petrol usage.

I think if we rode a bike to work one day a week...or just stayed out of our cars one day a week it would make more impact. Most people drive somewhere every day. Personally I set a limit to the amount of gas I will buy....if I can't get by on my set amount I walk, ride, or carpool. I bet if people did that it would make a bigger dent....IMO of course.

They were talking about similar stuff on the radio a minute ago. Basically said that even if people start carpooling more, riding bikes to work.. then the demand is lower, so the prices go up to fill in the gap when people aren't buying.
So whether you buy gas and they charge $x or you buy less gas and they charge you $x +$x to make their profit the same. I've put it off all year, but I think we'll start bike commuting 3-4 days a week starting next Mon or Tues. We only have 9mi a day, but hopefully we can save a few bucks a week. Still gotta drive to the grocery store and back, and then weekend rides. I guess we could all vow not to drive anywhere for the next month for weekend riding, but there isn't much fun in that. |

Ahhhhhhhh, make it stop!
I was bombarded with text messages and E-mails about this yesterday. I don't understand why people can't understand that a one day boycott wouldn't do a damn thing. I mean even if nobody in the US bought gas today, everyone would have just bought that gas yesterday or tomorrow. Kinda defeats the purpose in the end.

You might make a difference if everyone drove cars that got 50mpg, but Americans, in general, are energy hogs. They'll change their ways when it bites them where it hurts the most, the wallet and the descretionary income getting smaller and smaller. People are resistant to change. It's not the goverment's job to force change, it's the peoples responsibility to make the change themselves, as they see fit. If they continue to be irresponsible and make poor choices for transportation, they get to live with it.

I'll just car pool and bike... It won't matter though, everything is still transported by trucks so my life will still be impacted by the rising cost in everything... from corn flakes to milk to bike tires... It will all cost more and thus I will still be screwed... ( however Ill be a little less screwed than the guy driving the fork excursion...)

Yes the lack of refineries plays a roll in gas prices. The biggest driver is that the price of crude is through the roof thanks primarily to China, India and other developing countries. This is not going to go away. Gas will hit an average price of $5.00 a gallon before we know it. In a few years that will be the good’ol days. My family currently spends $650 a month on fuel. If prices continue the way they are soon it will be $800. What to do? Boycotting gas stations for one day won’t send a message to anyone. You would have more impact staying out of Walmart and not buying any products made in China (impossible I know). In the next few years we will start to see more clean diesel engines in our vehicles and the prices of hybrids will come down. Fuel prices will continue to rise but the 12mpg vehicles will become 20mpg etc…. |
